OK i just looked at the broken one I have, the red yellow wire attaches to the D shaped piece under the retainer. It has a contact on one side that the pin touched and the wire solders to the back side. Mine is a K0 so it may be different. it has only that one wire so the circuit must be made to ground I don't know where your other wire goes.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

ok so i just went and turned the motorcycle on, neutral light was on, i then proceeded to touch the yellow/red to the green/red wire and the starter did not turn over.

Whack the body of the solenoid with a screwdriver handle, it may be stuck, try touch wires again....

whacking did not help. it could be the bullet connectors are getting a bad connection who knows.

i cant pull in the clutch because hdlparts has shipped my stupid clutch cable yet, they are pissin me off. if i read the wiring diagram right i think the yellow/red wire should be grounded and not to a green/red wire.
gonna go try that brb

good news, if you touch that yellow/red wire to a ground the starter turns right over and even started the bike. Now i just have to figure out exactly how it is wired into the button or just go to radioshack and buy a new one. Any links on how to wire an aftermarket button on or can give steps

O.K.,good, almost there, but somethings-up with the safety unit ( you say'what ? )....anyway for now if you really want to ...yellow/red to one side and ground to the other side of a momentary switch will start the bike...make sure your always in N, tho'.

Green/red wire just needs the end insulated..it's left disconnected...this really is a band-aid fix as the safety unit needs to be tested.......

right i figured that i could put a switch on and do that and get by. now that i think about it when i first looked i didnt see any bare wire coming from the green/red so it might have never been connected. I am still not sure where that wire is supposed to be soldered to and you are prolly right it is prolly a malfunction in the safety unit, how can i fix that problem

Man!, there are loads of possibilities... just quick tho', trace green/red from button into h/l shell, is it connected to 3way conn.with 3 green/red?

see i am not sure about that because the po took out one wire, all i know is there is just one green/red wire coming from the main branch of wires

i do seem to recall taking out a red/green wire that was connected to the main red/green wire and then had a just green wire on it also, maybe the red/green wire also needs to be grounded as well?

o.k. that green/red from the loom needs to end-up at the starter button ...further tests will need a volt meter or a test light.....
right then if green/red was connected to green then P.O. had a problem with the start safety unit and by-passed its function by connecting gr/rd to ground........there is your explanation !!

On the 74 Cb550, the starter button simply connects the Yellow/Red to the Green/red. The bar switch is a momentary single pole single throw that is normally off.
The starter solenoid gets a black wire (key switch power) connection and then the Y/R from the starter button provides a 12V return (gnd) from the G/R.  The G/R GND is sourced from the Starting Motor Safety Unit.  The SMSU logically provides GND on the G/R wire when the LG/R wire from the closed neutral switch supplies GND, or a G/R GND from the closed Clutch switch (clutch disengaged position of the lever).

I can only guess that you have some other unconnected wires on the bike, if the SMSU isn't doing it's job.

I haven't had my 74 starter switch control pod apart since 1975.  For some reason, my snap shot mental image of the inards is not accessible.  ;)
I'll need incentive to take it apart again.

thanks for that, man dont worry about taking that apart, that seems like way to much work for me to do for just the starter safety switch i think.

do you think it is safe to assume that its prolly the ground wire to the SMSU?

Assumptions are dangerous when dealing with things electrical.  Firm knowledge is key to success and sometimes survival (both to the electrical components and sometimes personnel, when higher potentials are involved).

But, what you assume about the SMSU is a possibility.
