i did find a spec sheet on hp website though... so that may be good help.

right now i'm remodeling though... i'll attack it again when i get home.

intel g33 is the graphics chipset, onboard.
Driver is here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2843&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

I still don't know what northbridge your motherboard has.

Point me at the vista driver download page so I can tell what you need, from there, ok?

It kinda tells you what you need. It's not giving specifics of what it actually is. "intel inf update". Big #$%*in deal. There's intel inf updates for 15 different chipsets/lan chipsets/wireless chipsets/graphic chipsets, etc.

I'll see what I can dig out.

need ethernet controller driver, i think.
and modem... but that may be installed as install attempts seem to not even want to start.

comp seems to be starting and running just fine.

once i'm able to connect i should be able to do a bit more.

is it a problem if i have this version of xp running on a different computer?  should i reinstall the other version of xp i have that is not presently installed anywhere else?

Problem is that the pc companies and hardware companies are not too big on xp drivers. HP, dell and the rest get special hardware and they make their drivers and companies such as intel and realtek make drivers but there are less being made for xp. Does not matter the version of xp. Once you do manage to find drivers IF you can find them all, save them on a disk for future use.

unzip to a folder on the desktop.
Go to device manager, right click on the eth controller, click "install driver" or whatever, then point it at that folder. Should work.

man!  i thought i'd deleted my sohc4.net/forums driver!   ;D
2 whole days of inability to contact mlinder and i still got the computer running flawlessly.   :)

ended up buying paretologic drivercure
dug thru my system very quickly and found the drivers i needed... the download of all the drivers was pretty damn slow but i still got all my drivers!

i've been working on the really slow computer now that i got this one we've been working on all done... dumped a bunch of the vista add-ons and gadgets and trinkets and what-nots and doohickeys... used the 1gig memory stick that i took out so that now it has 2gig RAM... even w/out doing much else the computer is running much better.  i still may dump vista on that one too though.  its simply a resource hog and i like my computers on a diet.   ;)

thanks everyone for the help... i love the fact that i can go to my trusty vintage bike forum for anything tech related... bikes, babes, taxes, computers, etc.   :)

oh no... my comp at home is safe and sound.
i wouldn't ever buy a computer w/ vista for my own computing needs... i'll just wait for the next round of microsoft mistakes.   ;)

we originally bought a 64 bit vista system for the office, which didn't work w/ our gate software... that computer has been sitting untouched until i started trying to put xp on it.
we've been using another computer w/ 32 bit vista as backup until i could get the 64bit vista changed to xp.  which is the one i want to put xp on now, as well.

basically, gate software will only run on 32 bit windows.
