Just buttoned up the motor...should I take it back apart?
« on: April 21, 2009, 06:24:11 PM »
Ok, so I just finished putting my 750k motor together and ran into a few issues after the fact.  Can you please let me know the severity of these issues and if it's worth pulling the motor apart again?

1. I used 2 shorter dowels between the cylinder and the case instead of the longer ones.

2. The head is a '71 and the cylinders are '76.  I forgot to install the 8 tall seals that are shown in the pic below as #2.

These are used on the '76 but NOT the '71.

So what do I do?  As of right now, the motor is still on the stand. Do I pull the motor back apart or leave it as is and hope for the best?
If I do pull it apart...Do I replace the head gasket and the base gasket? What issues can I expect to run into if I don't pull the motor apart?
Thanks in advance.

Has learned so far that..."complete" gaskets are never complete no matter where you get them, VHT Silver Case Paint is just as durable as painting your motor with chalk and cheap tire irons used with rim protectors are useless on 30 year old tires.

Dang dude, that sucks. I would guess it's gonna leak if you didnt install those 8 taller oil seals.

As far as the headgasket and base gasket goes, I dont know, I'd probably replace them just for piece of mind, but hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in.

Tear it and replace the missing seals.
The head and base gaskets should be fine.
You haven't run it up and fully seated the gaskets anyway.

+1 on the oil seals.....no worries on the shorter dowel pins.....head and base gasket will be fine to re use....

Will the 71 head have proper recesses for the oil seal sleeves?  I've often wondered about this when people mix and match heads like this.

I was looking at the '76 head last night (it currently has a bolt extractor stuck in the #1 plug threads from the PO...but that's ANOTHER story) and it looks like there's no recesses in the head for those seals. From pictures I can find online, it looks like the recesses for the seals are in the cylinders only. I could be wrong thou.

I'm relieved that you guys say I can reuse the head/base gaskets.  Replacing them would be another $70 I would have to drop just because of a stupid mistake. Also, if the shorter dowels are ok between the cylinders and the case, then that makes my life even easier.

Looks like I'll be tearing into the motor this weekend.  Thanks for all the advice!

Oh and if you want some pics...The motor went from this...

to this....
