How do you think this was done
« on: April 25, 2009, 10:53:11 AM »
This tank was painted for Harley for an art exhibit they sponsored. Very cool. The technique is called scratchboard. Normally a piece of board is coated thinly with white clay, painted black then the black is scratched off with small metal tools. Im wondering if this could be done with two layers of paint as I doubt the clay would hold up on a bike.

Another way is to either chrome or copper plate something them paint it black...

and scratch off your design. Something we used to do in graphic design for fun.

Then just clearcoat and you're off.

Maybe a thick and complete coat of bondo under the paint?

Different curing times?  I note that paint less than a week old is still pretty soft and easily dented.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

It might not be white paint under there, but rather we might be seeing bare metal under the black paint.  There was an episode of American Chopper a while back where they had a lady who detailed a frame like this.  They painted a base coat and then she went at it with a dremel and an engraving point.  They then cleared over the whole deal.  Nice effect.

Maybe they were trying to make it louder or sound better.  That gives me an idea to install a vacuum tube rectifier on a bike.  That would be slick.  Show piece only since it would rattle the pooh out of the tubes, but slick.
