72 CB500 points timing
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:06:43 AM »
I bought new points and condensers and installed them but for the life of me I cannot get it to run again. I am in the process of purchasing a timing light, but I followed the shop manual and the clymers manual multiple times with no luck. I think the timing needs to be advanced. PLEASE anyone, can you give me some tips, tricks, hints on how to set it? I bought an inductive timing light that wont be here for a week and I just want to get it started before the light gets here.

Take a look at this site.  Hopefully it will shed some light.  I think you definitely need the timing light to get it done.

You can make a timing light with two crocodile clips, two bits of wire and an old 12V bulb.

With the ignition on and the lamp connected across the points, the light comes on at the instant the points open. This should align with the F mark on the timing plate.
