Avoid Old Bike Barn like the plague!
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:12:00 PM »
So, I decided to go against my better judgment and order some progressive springs and fork seals from oldbikebarn.com

I ended up spending about $115 with shipping and everything on April 17.  They took the money out of my account on the 22nd, but the shipping page says allow 3-5 business days for shipping.  So I wait until Sunday the 26th to contact them on their form email on the website.  I ask them to give me an update on the status of the order, seeing it has been 5 business days (nine REAL days).

No response.

I call their 800 number on Monday and get an automated "No one is available to answer your call, business hours are from 10am to 6pm EST" (and I called at 2:30 EST).  I called again today and got the same.  So today I sent another email through their "rapid email contact form" asking to please cancel my order.

We'll see what actually happens.

I wonder of it is possible to report them the bbb. I mean they supposedly are ok with the bbb but maybe some of us who have been burned should register complaints.

I've ordered from Old Barn.  I don't recall having any troubles (other than paying too much for my Sparto tail light).

I don't care for Airtech, and I think Maier brand side covers are kind of shoddy quality.  Other than those two, I don't recall having any problems from anyone else.

Guess I'm lucky....

Hey Dan, Havoc lives up to his word and then some.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Hey, thanks Havoc!

I'm in a wait-and-see state right now...  If they do refund the money, I'm looking for a set of Progressive fork springs and standard fork seals for a 1978 Yamaha XS750 Special (XS750S).

I've managed to find the fork springs for $70 at Moto-Depot and Vesrah seals for about $15 from Cycle Recycle.

Been there done that with them. Their site isn't even worth visiting in my opinion.

Hi Fuzz,
Check the thread you started in the SOHC4/bikes section.  I explained it there a few days ago.   :)

Why did you do that, Dan?  We've had a thread going on about OBB for ages in the Bad Folks section of the reviews forum.

I know, I know!  I've never ordered anything from them simply because of the horror stories.  But they were the cheapest source I could find at the time.  Chock it up to trying to save a few bucks  :-\

Just do a chargeback through your credit card.  OBB will get the hint next time they look at their statement.

I managed to talk to them today and canceled the order.  They were very polite on the phone and apologized for the problem (apparently they have been swamped with customer calls which has tied up the system...  I wonder why?)

I was an idiot to use them to begin with, I definitely learned my lesson!

Give me a day or two Dan and I'll get you best / better / good prices for that stuff.

OBB is strictly an online site. They have people from all over doing customer service, site management, payments, etc.

I'd be surprised if there's even a physical store you can go to. At some point they claimed to have one but.... you never know.  ;)

$70 for the fork springs and $11 for the seals +shipping.

$81 + shipping is the best I can do.

Let me know if that works for you.

Did OBB give you your money back yet? Takes them a while from what I hear.

No, they haven't deposited the money yet.  But I'm willing to be patient just a little bit longer.

Those prices would definitely work for me, but I didn't get the job I was hoping for to tide me over between semesters during the summer...  I may have something else lined up, but for now it looks like the money may be going straight towards the "save Dan" fund instead of my bike improvement program.

I'm in "wait and see" mode right now.  You'll be the first I go to when I'm ready for the investment, Havoc!

No problemo!

They shouldn't ever be on back order so time won't be a problem.

Better yet...print it off...put it in a ziplock bag...duct tape the bag to a nice heavy brick...and launch said brick through the window of one of the owners of OBB if you could find them.

Just to add another dissatisfied customer to the list.  I thought I knew how bad they were when I ordered and was not in a hurry for some carb and tuneup parts - but after 4 months, I decided I had enought waiting and wanted my $140 bucks back.  They said they would credit my card.  Never did.  Finally just had the card company charge them back.  They are internet idiots of the highest order.
