Help! Stuck Bolt, need suggestions.
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:49:16 AM »
I'm dissasembling a 350F engine, and I'm stuck trying to remove the cam shaft sprocket. There are two 10mm "knock bolts" on the sprocket itself, and one came out with a little tap on a wrench, and the other has become the bane of my existence. It will not budge. I have tried (persuant to the search function on this board) in order:
-Regular breaker bar
-Sprayed with WD-40, let soak
-Socket wrench and mallet
-Impact wrench w/ socket head
-dremeled a deep slot across the head and tried impact wrench with flathead
-swore, wished eternal damnation on the bolt
-cried, apologized to bolt, begged and pleaded

So, here I sit, defeated, the bolts only cost a dollar, so I don't care about it at all. Any suggestions?

VERY carefully dremel the head off or better till its so thin the sprocket breaks the last bit off and it probable the piece will unscrew when there is no tension on it
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

If you are going this route, you might as well put a socket and a long breaker/cheater bar on it. It'll either budge, or twist off.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Heat the area.  Heat does wonders sometimes
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

You may find the bolt has been "loctited" into place, if that's the case then a bit of heat around the bolt will probably release it..

hope you don't snap it off ..... :)

I'd try other things first, but eventually drilling a small hole down the center of the bolt might loosen it up.  If it doesn't, you can go step by step larger on the drill size (making sure you're not messing up the female threads!).  Once in a blue moon I have to go that route.

Edit:  Looking at the picture, I see it might be pretty hard getting in there with a drill.   :-\
