oil pan

i over tightened the drain bolt and stripped the threads on the oil pan of my bike. any suggestions? can i simply tap the threads and will that make it seal?
this is a good one for my first post.....

If you can find a bigger oil pan bolt and a tap that would fit, and of course make sure the new bolt doesn't stick up enough to hit anything then I bet it would work. Or maybe helicoil?(If they have one this size  :-\ )
Or option #2 source another oil pan, new gasket for the pan, and keep on truckin'  ;)

Wait until the rest of the bunch weighs in....
So what bike do you have? Year? Model?

My hole had cracked so I used a washer with a rubber insert for a while but then decided to get a new pan. Not much help to you except that I spent $12 for a pan. So they are not expensive if you go that route.
I would tap it though myself if you have no cracks, I would just maybe go slightly courser on the thread.

my bike is 75 cb400f. it is in great shape, my first honda four, it just needs a little love. previous owner jerry-rigged all his repairs and maintenance. thank you for your response.

any ideas as to how to find out the size of the helecoil i need? its a 17mm hex bolt.

welcome........Um,always state the type of bike your working on....... ;) ;)

post what year/model bike you have and you will get an answer to what typre bolt was in there etc/...

The Microfiche at Hondaparts-direct says its a 12mm.  ;)  For a 75 CB400F

Thread pitch is likely a 1.25, though that's the unknown. Get a thread gauge or i would just take it with me to the heli-coil store.

Hi reed,

As the prior posters have said, perhaps if there are no cracks, you can clean up the threads by re-tapping..... but metric taps are not cheap (in fact, good taps of any system size are not cheap).

Helicoil might be OK, these plugs are torqued to only about 24 ft lbs.  But, helicoil setups are not cheap either.

If you need to buy another crankcase bottom plate, cost isn't bad, as someone has already mentioned.  But, you would have to buy the gasket so that it seals good upon re-installation.  Going this route, you would accomplish 2 things....... you could clean up the bottom exterior and the bottom interior (including the oil pump screen, which is supposed to be done periodically anyway).

I think I would opt for this last option.  But then, I have a massive motorcycle salvage yard near me........ probably 5,000 motorcycles in there..... most are Japanese. ;) ;)

thank you for your response. i cant wait to get this fixed so i can get back on the road. i have the gasket on the way.
anyone have a used oil pan for a 75 cb400f for sale?
