the infamous cb550 with the 32 miles.....no-one believes!!!
« on: October 30, 2005, 10:18:00 AM »
To the believers....
Help again please.
I have removed the front brake caliper from my restoration project 1978cb550 four k3 - the "piston side" pad is ceased tight. Any tips on freeing, or replacing the full caliper with a new one if required....where to get????
If I free the one I have, should I repaint, or is powdercoating an option. The external surface is damaged.
Thanks again,
Gary

I used compressed air through the brake line to blow mine out. make sure it's pointed at something that will catch it.

Hey gary,If the air dosent work you could try a grease gun over the bleed nipple. If you do a search here you will find plenty of threads on this subject.
cheers

I could not get mine out with compressed air. I rebuilt master cylinder and put in new fluid and started pumping. It came out.

As Bodain suggests, pump the piston out with the hydraulic system.  As for the caliper, you can have it ceramic coated.  The coating wiill last longer than paint and resists brake fluid.  Andy in NZ had one done and it looks great.

The caliper piston on my 350F project was seized tight also. Compressed air wouldn't budge it. I laid it on my bench piston up and tapped on it using a big socket the same size as the piston for a drift. Got it to move just a little (inwards) then used compressed air to push it back out a little. I repeated many times till the piston popped out.

Yeah, what the person above said! But, put our caliper in a plastic bag and pump your brakes! It'll jump out! Don't worry! It's nothing nothing crazy like a bullet, just a pop.....
