u might be able to get the slow jets out with a pair of brass tip vide grip and wiggle them out
and yes u should be able to poke through them

u can also get replacement slow jets on ebay or from someone on here may have some

The slow jets for the PD carbs are pressed or swagged in.  To clean, you must yank them out.  They are a tube with a restricted orifice inside them.  You should see light through them.
The orifice is about 0.016 inch in diameter.  So, if you insist on poking something through them, make sure the poking device is smaller that that diameter.

Use a rag and a very gentle squeeze with vice grips. Twist as you pull. They'll come out pretty easily.

The nighthawk's slow jets were designed to be removable...at least according to my Clymer. Odd that they never thought of this until 1982.

You may have already figured it out, I found that it helps to hold them your arms like cradling a baby as opposed to setting them down on a table or workbench. That way you cab squeeze them with your arms and pull down as you pull up with the pliers. I didn't figure that out until I saw Spanner1 do it.
