Bike won't start again
« on: November 01, 2005, 08:41:37 AM »
Hey guys maybe you can help me out a bit here. I cleaned the carbs with the yamaha carb cleaner, and I got the bike up and running. Took it out for a few miles, then had to put it back in. Today tried to start it, and its a no go. Won't even fire up with a starting fluid.

Pull a plug and see if it is getting spark and fuel.

Pull a plug and rest it on the cylinder head (reconnect to HT lead first!).
Crank engine.
You should get a big fat (blue) spark - if not, ignition problem
Is plug wet, if not then fuel problem.

Report back.

If you only get a bitty spark at RTP (Room Temp and Pressure), it sure as hell won't spark at 100+ psi.

It would be unusual for all four plugs to fail at the same time  ??? so...

...You didn't say whether the plugs are wet.

Ok. I checked spark plugs 1 & 4 (my socket was too big to get the others out), and on the two i checked, not alot of spark. I checked the two plugs against the clymer manual, and the look to be oil fouled, but were not dripping wet. The oil would come off 'moist' if you wiped your finger on the plug.

I called up my friendly local Honda shop, and told the guy about my problem. He said the spark shouldn't be gigantic, but as long as its blue im good. It's Blue so i'm good... except it won't start. I told him about the plugs looking oil fouled, he said to try and replace them and see if that helps. I replaced the outter two, but can't get to the center two. What do you guys use to get them out??? I have a socket type spark plug thingamabob. (just for a refresher it's a 1980 cb650)

Do you have the Honda toolkit? It should have a long, thin plug spanner that will reach the centre plugs.

I had the same problem getting to 3&4 and could not get the 'regular' plug spanner to fit, although other people say it can be done. I bought a 18mm short plug spanner from my local shop(UK) for 2 pounds and it fits a treat!
One small tip when putting 2&3 plugs back in, get a piece of plastic pipe(9mm approx) that fits over the plug top, then use this to hold the plug as you carefully screw it in.
