PO was a screw stripping spring vampire!
« on: May 22, 2009, 11:44:15 PM »
I am mystified! Whoever was the PO is a freak! SO when i bought the bike it ran okay. I came to realize it lacked an oil filter and air filter. No big deal... I go to take the carbs apart and clean 'em all up, of course the damn fool stripped every screw on every damn float bowl! No big deal $2.50 later and I've got shiny new screws anyways. I pull off the accelerator pump and the spring is missing? Wow who would need that spring? You've got to be kidding me! Well i got a pic of the spring from a guy on the forums and solved that one. Oh but the fun doesn't stop there. I go to remove the vacuum cylinder caps and the moron left me with only one spring for all four carbs! Here is my problem gentlemen. The local shops can't order the springs, no one online has them(this might be because i can't figure out what to call the damn things!), and ace doesn't have anything like them. I've checked into getting them custom made on-line, i found a few places that say they'll make springs but is this going to cost a fortune? Also i thought I might try to make my own. My final thought is to try junkyards. Any advice?

I can't believe he left the oil filter off?
My Clymer shows 4 different springs for your carbs,
1) Compression spring....is located under the large silver domes and holds down the vacuum cylinder.

2) Air shutoff diaphram spring....puts pressure on the Air shutoff diaphram.

3) Synchronisation set screw.....has a small pressure spring on it.

4) Primary nozzle spring.

Which is it?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

It's the compression springs I'm missing.  All but one.
Why would he leave me one, but jack the rest?

Something I've done in the past when I needed carb parts was to buy a cheap set of carbs off ebay and then just pick-and-choose the parts I needed.  If you get a set that are complete but really ugly and in serious need of a rebuild you can usually get them really cheap.

Let me know how your junk yard / Ebay hunting goes.  I have a set off carbs off of an '81 engine that I am not using right now since the bike has the '79 engine in the frame.  And I don't plan on using the '81 carbs on the '81 engine.
Now  1972 CB350FX (experimental v2.0)
        1981 CB650c Custom with '79 engine (wifes)
        1981 CB650 engine
        2004 HD XL883C Custom
        1977 Yamaha XS750D (in progress)
Then 1972 CL175
        1964 Yamaha YGS-1T
