Anyone know the differences between the frames in respect of tank inter changeability?

Anyone have pictures of both?

oil or gas

A model gas tank should fit all frames, none of the others will fit the A model.

Gas tank Frank. I need to know if a CR tank will fit the automatic frame.
I know that the frames are not the same under the tank as the head is removable with motor in frame in the auto.

That is where it will hit if its going to. I think on a steel tank it might be easy to mod.

Is a CR tank aluminum or glass?

I can tell you that the 77/78K tanks and the auto tanks are identical, mounts and all.  The only exception being that the auto typically had a gas gauge fitted underneath the flap cover.

that would be cool!
Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.
