How long is too long?
« on: November 07, 2005, 08:31:12 PM »
So what is "too long" of a time to let your bike sit without taking it out for a spin?? A month? 2 weeks?

Ive been taking my bike out for at least a 30 minute ride every 7 days. Thats about the only time i can find when its not raining here in portland, once every 7 days. What if i let it sit for 2 weeks, or a month before riding it again? Just wondering if i have to "pack it in" or can i just take it for a half hour ride or so every week or two during the rainiest months. is that so bad for it?

No fair! You get half-hour intervals in the winter where it doesn't rain? It seems like up here in the gorge the only time it isn't raining is when it's snowing.   ;D

My bike is put away until March or April.  :(

It won't hurt it to sit for a month, or even a couple of months, assuming it's in a dry place.  If it sits that long, it is a good for the battery and the charging system to charge it a bit before starting.

OK, I lied. It was sunny and I couldn't stand it so I went for a ride the other day. Felt so good I might do it again too!

Well it's about 21 deg C (about 70 deg F) here in chilly Melbourne, Australia today, brrrr! It was so cold I had to wear some light gloves and an extra thick T shirt today, I've got a cold so I took the afternoon off and braved the cold weather for a quick 50 mile ride on the ol' K1 Kruiser, man it was cool, not even the usual heat haze coming up off the road!

I stopped at a "pub" for an ice cold VB, but felt kinda guilty because the weather is so cool I didn't feel all that thirsty? Even the topless barmaids were noticably cooler today, he he......... Ah well, once this cool spell is over, we'll all be back to normal and I can pack those ol' gloves away for another summer, ha ha! Cheers, Terry.  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, I reckon you fell asleep ol' fella, and your nose hit something on the keyboard, ha ha! Here's a pic of some Aussie girls braving the cool conditions to help promote our national drink. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I know that our parts shrink with cold, but if it was cold, shouldn't those nipples point menacingly towards us?????

I'm sure Raul meant grease nipple or bleed nipple,  are there any other types?

Apart from condensation in the exhaust, does short running cause any other problems? Say, if you started the bike up every couple of days for a few minutes?

OK Terry,
that's it, I will no longer send you notices on parts from colder countries. 70F!! heck it was 24F this morning when I fired
up and went for a spin. Only took me 20 minutes to put on gloves and a few other things. ???

Jim, I guess I would have to vote that that is not a good idea. These tend to be cold blooded and it takes more time than you might think to get them to operating temp. Condensation in the exhaust, particularly anything with 4-into-4's would be a serious problem, heck, I can grasp the ends of my exhausts after a summer ride and not get burned. It might be a little better on models where all 4 use the same pipe. Still, during warm-up you are running rich, a lot of idle or just above. Not the best circumstances in my opinion, but just that, my opinion.

I NEVER ride my SOHC less than 25 kilometers, and thats in the summer. Cold starts will wear out your engine more than you ever will believe, and (especially if you have 4 pipes) the pipes rarely get warm enough to evaporate condensation. I always stuff oily rags up my pipes after each ride to reduce the amount of condensation buildup. You will do your bike no favours at all by starting it up for a few minutes at a time. Rather, prepare you bike for winter storage and then leave it be.

I was going to mention this in my prior post, but didn't.  I believe you are far better off letting it sit than you are briefly idling it periodically.  Not only does moisture collect in the exhaust system, but also the oil, which ain't good.  As I said before, I don't believe leaving the bike sitting idle up to a couple of months will be a problem if the environment is dry.  Any longer than that, I believe the bike should be pickled to be on the safe side, especially if it is winter and your storage area goes through significant temperature and humidity changes - such as the typical garage.  I lived in Alaska for many years, so I have some experience with this.

Please enlighten me gentlemen. Is that "N" word so rude or unpolite? Even more than "boobs"? In spanish, while you can say the equivalent to "nipple", saying the equivalent to "boob" is unpolite if used outside your circle of friends and/or relatives..

Sorry, I thought it was common usage.  Pickling involves things like putting oil in the cylinders, draining the tank and coating the inside to prevent rust, etc, for long term storage.

The word nipple is not obsene. In fact I suggest that we all strive to use it more often...especially when accompanied with pictures.  ;D

Nah, just pulling your leg, Raul  ;D I would ALWAYS respect a girl who would like to speak of her nipples, even outside my circle of friends and/or relatives...
