Black screens in the U.S.
« on: June 11, 2009, 08:17:09 AM »
In Norway, the analog TV signals closed on June 9 .
--------------------------------------------------

Now happens the largest analog tv-extinguishing ever. 12.juni turned the analog signals of the USA - at the same time across the country.

It is estimated that 20 million Americans see on TV with an antenna and for them the date 12. June special. When fading namely the analogue TV transmitters in the USA and only some small, local stations will continue analog out in June. Around 42% of TV stations sending digital before the transition.

I guess you guys in Norway are ahead of the US in converting over by a couple days. I'm not directly affected since I have digital cable service but they (the goverment? not sure who "they" really are) has offered digital converters at what seems to be pretty reasonable price ~ $15. Supposedly you will have access to more channels and at a better quality but I can't vouch for that.

I have cable in my home, but the shop needed a converter box for a signal. I've got a few more channels, and a little clearer perhaps than the bunny ears. I'll be wondering what may improve tomorrow if anyhting. Other than that, no big woop.  I just need FOX to watch my toons, Simpsons, Family Guy, etc while I'm working. Maybe a little weather, news, CSI. Otherwise its the old audio cassette deck for me, hiss and all.  Sometimes with the iPod plugged in.

I have a pop-up camper, and an old TV that we take along, but was wondering about using this tv with the converter.  What type of an antenna would one use with such a thing without having to drag around an antenn that would require a special mount or something equally as dumb?
(Ok, you people that think camping is no place for a tv.... :-X )

You will need a wide band antenna Steve. We change over in November in my part of the UK.
I got a converter a couple of years ago but could not pull in the signal with my C/D type antenna.
I get a superb picture now and about 40 extra channels with the wide bander in the loft.

I use a $20 phillips power boosted rabbit ears with my big screen HDTV, MC, so I'm betting it will also work with the digital converter box. I have the same issue with the TV in may camping trailer. I'll let you know when my coupons get here.

That will be a wide band antenna Pat but it's directional qualities may be a bit lacking.

That's true, Sam, the antenna is limited. But my camper doesn't have a loft. I use the satellite to pick up most channels at home, but there are several local channels that broadcast one two or three additional digital channels. I can pick those up. On a good day I can get the channels from Waco and that's 80 miles away.

You should get a better digital picture than you did with analog. We use satellite and have analog TVs hooked up to those receivers. No difference here. My daughter has had a small digital TV for a while and the digital signal is better. It is either good without the snow effect or non existent. One channel transmits 2 additional subchannels. 11.1 & 11.2. These provide news on one and weather on the other. We got a digital converter box for another small analog TV. It now has a better picture and also now picks up the 2 subchannels.

I got my sale flyer from Radio Shack yesterday, and they're offering a converter box for $15 without coupons.  I may just get one.

edit: took a look at the really fine print, and they're $59 and $15 with the coupon
