clutch in - rpm out
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:06:05 AM »
I have been restoring a 74 cb550 and i have run into a wierd problem. First off some info: carbs were cleaned 3 mths ago, the bike always ran a little rich but the fuel/air ratio has been worked out, the carbs do need to be synced again and the valves need an adjustment. (P.O. did not follow repair schedule).
Yesterday i took it out for a ride and the bike ran better than ever. No 'blubbering' at stops due to rich mixture and acceleration was very responsive. Half way through i came to a stop with the clutch in and the bike died. After restarting i was coming to another stop, put the clutch in ... bam rpms dead. At nuetral the bike idles at 1500, no problems. But when i start to take off with the clutch in and the bike in first it now wants to die. Changed plugs and the bike feels like it struggles now to accelerate?

Searched the forums for an answer. I am lost? Any suggestions??

I have to leave for work now, but i will try to respond to any comments tonight when i work on the bike again. Even though i wont be able to respond immediately any thoughts would really be a help. Thanks guys.

The only thing I can think of is the difference of being in Neutral and being in 1st gear: The neutral switch is not active.  Maybe there is a intermittent short somewhere that comes into play when the neutral switch is not active (i.e. grounded which in turn activates the light).  Also check the charging system.  Stumbling is a sign of low voltage to the coils.

Do your tune up steps and sync the carbs. Out of sync carbs will cause this to happen, and I'm speaking from experiencing it myself. Since syncing my carbs, pulling the clutch in hasn't killed the bike.

thanks for the help sporkfly...

You know the bike was working fine days and weeks before this happened. this just happened out of the blue. I have been needing to change the battery for a while now (the starter wont start the bike unless i charge the battery first, I have to kickstart it),

So are you saying the bike might need a fresh battery???

HD, thanks in advance to anyone with any insight.

I will also pull out my crappy motionflo carbs sync system and sync the carbs. Thanks.

my bike was way out of time some times the bike would stall like u said or other times the RPMs would race into 4 or 5 thou i timed it and problem solved... if u have some feeler gauges do the timing points and the valves its not to hard of a job just very specific tuning  and get the carbs synched as soon as possible . i did all this and its like a new beast give it a shot its worth it
