New 69! ...and the 78
« on: July 06, 2009, 10:00:09 PM »
I ended up picking up the 69... made in 10/69, the title says 1970. Check it out. Came with some extras...I plan on giving the 69 the full cafe treatment. What do you think?

Nice 69..
That is a Hooker 4-1 missing the end cap.
Does that bike have the recessed ignition switch, and when you look in the gas tank is there wrinkles in the metal?

Here is the serial...

The extra tank...forgot about this. Does anybody know what it may be off of? The guy that sold me the bike thought it was not from a CB750

Relocated Ignition? I can't find where it should mount underneath.

The starter switch...

Black kill switch is good.

Ign switch is newer.
Tank if it has 2 metal tubes underneath at rear, is Honda 450.

 I have a set of cases,.. 10,17*.. ...I am thinking 10 or 11th month 69. Going to be a 970cc motor..

Cb750s can be bored out to 850cc with stock sleeves.
915cc with sleeves, no case boring.

Bigger than that means boring out the case holes for bigger sleeves...up to 1080cc, with stock stroke..

Oh, I thought you were suggesting that it was already done...somehow.

Is that tank what you expected?

I think it is a 75 or 76 CB750 tank, the SaFetyNazis, made them move the petcock to the left side, and they even ebossed the shift pattern in the transmission cover.. :o

Does your bike have a short plastic chainguard?

BTW the ignition switch up to 76 was on a bracket  below the gas tank, left side at the front.

No, it's a crusty metal one...

Where did the ignition mount on this frame? I don't see any brackets that I would expect to...

Ignition should mount under the gastank at the front (as in second photo) but you are missing the ignition bracket. Your black kill switch/right hand housing is worth some $$ so take care of it..same goes for the speedo/tach gauges. I got $300 for the tach last year....

Looks like a great project!!

cheers
Andy

Is it a crime to cafe this bike? Should I hold out for a later model?

As a guy in the middle of a 12/69 K0 restoration project, it may not be a crime but there are many more later models to cafe.  In my mind the real early ones are a history lesson. Having said that it will be a lot cheaper to create a nice cafe then a full on resto. Just my opinion, it's your bike. I started with a K0 that was in worse shape than yours. Every day is a treasure hunt and my treaure chest is far from full.
Cheers,
Cliff.

I used plug wires like that, they may be Thundervolts.. you might have upgraded coils.

Do you know if it has a cam or bore kit in it? Check valve clearances and write them down before adjusting (in case it has a hotter cam)

if you get a chance pull of the chain cover at the front sprocket, clean a bit on the case around the chain, look for damage. They often threw chains, and cases are sometimes welded or temporarily repaired. If it is its not the end of the world, but it does affect value a bit, and may influence wether you cafe it or not.

The coils are upgraded for sure, they are the same orange color as the wires. Someone put new points and condensers in there too. It was last on the road in 2007. It is not known why it was parked...

I figure even If I cafe it, it can always be undone. Getting back on the road is better than letting it die in a barn!

Guess I dont see why moving the petcock to the left side makes someone a safety nazi. Easier to get to the idle knob.

Too true! Save all the K0 parts, they are getting more valuable all the time!

It was moved to the left so you wouldnt need to take your hand off the throttle when flipping the petcock to reserve......some would say this was a safer option.

I took the 78 again tonight. I took the clubmans of and put some drag bars on. So far, I like them a lot. I still have some carb tweaking to do but, that will come this weekend.
More pics of the 69! Check out that after market airbox. Anybody seen one of those?

something i had always wondered about. now i know!
