Taking engine out question/s
« on: July 16, 2009, 09:46:47 AM »
It seems to me to be easier to lay the bike on its side and take thre frame off rather then right side up to take the engine out...would you agree?  I know I'll need to take off the oil filter housing, disconnect the oil lines...any other suggestions...

Take off the breather cover too. There's three screws for it.

Then, get a buddy to help inch the motor over a couple inches (it helps big time), then lay on the side and the frame will slide pretty easily off the engine.

Remove drivechain, wires, starter motor etc. Centerstand helps. Put a car jack under oil pan w/ a 2x4 between them. Just crank the jack up till it BARELY supports the motor. Then pull the long motor bolts, use a drift to tap them thru. Don't bang on bolts w/ a hammer unless you have a nut screwed on to them. Have a 2nd person handy (to help drink beers). Get on left side of bike , lean over and lift, and have 2nd person grab the kick lever. Drop it on a milk carton. Sometimes they come out very ez. The floor jack can help lift all the while. Gotta get the rear of motor up.

Removing the exhaust spigots will give you a little more play room and save scratching the frame  up more.

I take out the exhaust studs, pull the chain, and all the bolts, pop the wiring harness plug and pull the sparkplug wires, pull the carbs, then lay it on an old chair cushion with a large metal plate and a floorjack and 2x4 chunks under the clutch housing  and jugs to shim it up

then I gently moved the frame around to get it up off the motor (with the help of my wife)
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Since you have to drain the oil.......I also remove the sump drain plug for more cleanance.  Have done both ways and by myself.  Take it easy and tape the frame.  I use grocery bags to prevent scratches.  When re-installing........it helps to have the front left motor mount bolt ready.
