Removal of studs from cases?
« on: November 24, 2005, 08:45:12 PM »
I bought a 1/2 drive stud extractor from Sears but it dont seem to go down to a small enough size to grab the case studs. Does anyone know if there is a 3/8" drive one that goes down small enough to grab our case studs or what do you use?

I posted about it a couple of days ago

and it seems that we are better off leaving the studs where they are. From what I can tell you, in my hardware store there are different stud remover sizes.

I have taken them out with double nuts. You need to use some heat (propane) on the case too.

Raul what hardware store is it your talking about?  Cause I got some high preformance ones that are a good grade and are not cut down (thinner) in the middle between the threads.  I made an adaptor from a Redhead cement stud to take up the extra space so the one I got will work but I like having the right tool for the job

It's a local hardware store in Spain. The tool I'm talking about is probably like the one you have:

I just removed mine with the tool just like  Raul's it works really well as long as you start from the out side studs and work from right to left. Had one stud stick in the tool but with a good percussion tool was able to get it out. I put the tool down close to the head but not to close as to hit the surface, and  used an extension on my ratchet they came off fairly easy. ;D      The tool was 19.95 plus tax at a Kragan auto supply. It has two openings in 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch. probibly like the one you have.

I've always managed to get out studs using a pair of ViceGrips. (real ViceGrips, not some of those knock-off locking pliers).  It ruins the threads on the stud, but if I feel a need to take it out, it needs to be replaced anyway.

This maybe a little late, but I always double nut, use a wrench on the lower nut and a pair of vise grips at the same time as close as possible to the case to remove.

I used the double nut way with a propane tourch to heat up the block right after I snapped one off at the block , but no worries it is a scrap block. this is what happens when you have too much power and alot of grip and a little frame flex.

I usually use the double nut system, but I also have a stud remover. When I rebuilt my engine I had one stud that did not want to come out... at all. I tried the double nut and the stud broke off. I tried the stud remover and there wasn't enough stud left to get a good grip. I ended up having to cut it off and drill it out.  :P  That's okay, though. I had a whole set of new studs anyway.   ;D
