Is anyone here using Dunlop K70s on a CB550? (K81?)
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:09:26 AM »
If so, how do you like them?  I'm looking at 3.25-19 and 4.00-18.

Also, does anyone know the difference between the K70 and the K81/TT100?  They frequently seem to be listed like "K70/K81/TT100"...

Thanks!
If I forgot to state it in my post, I'm probably talking about a 1976 CB550K...

I put K70's on my CB750K0 because of the look. I'm happy with them. Handling is great.

Thanks for the input guys.  I have a couple of local shops to check stock at and see if there are any suitable tires I can get a killer deal on.  If not, I think I'm going to order up a set of the K70s.

The K81 or TT100 (same thing) was a high performance tire that was named after the 1969 Isle of Man TT 100 race where Malcolm Uphill lapped the mountain course at an average speed of 100 mph on the brand new Dunlop K81.  The K81 was also named the TT100 in honr of Malcolm Uphill.  Throughout the 1970's the K81 was arguably the stickiest street tire available.  The K70 was more of a universal fitment tire.  The K70 has a taller sidewall with thicker tread and will really fill out a CB.  If you are going with a period cafe bike the K81 would be the better choice.

Cool.  Thanks for the additional information.  The main reason I asked is because I've heard much mention of the TT100 here on the forum.  The closest available sizes to the original CB550 tires seem to be 4.10-19 front and 4.25-18 rear... Based on all the threads here, that would be quite on the large size for the skinny 550 rims.  This is correct yes?  Perhaps the TT100s are the "classic" performance tire for 750s, which I assume have a slightly wider rim?  Or, would these larger K81/TT100 sizes actually work well on the CB550?

TT100's are the classic tyre from the period but dont expect more than 3,000 (5,000 if you are VERY careful) from the rear

So they are real soft then... Okay.  Still leaning towards the K70s.

Vintage Ludwig and Slingerland with a spattering of new custom.  (I've been building my own.)  I'm not familiar with "OLD".  Is it a forum?  I'm a regular at ghostnote.net, not as "drumgod" though.  :D

Shoot me a PM if you want to talk drums.

doug_id did, on this beauty and won bike of the month, back in May 2007. ;)  I remember talking to him about those tires, because they were MY choice back in the 60's and I'd like to use them again. 8)
