Fuel Tank "locking" catch
« on: November 27, 2005, 07:32:16 AM »
OK I just got hold of a microfiche that explains a lot. Sorry no copies as i cant print it out!!

The "locking" tank cap catch (any key fits) was a recall part and ALL bikes; replacement tanks and any customers replacement tanks should have been fitted with the locking type catch under a US recall asked for by the National Transport Safety People.

There were two types of these;-
one fitted the 350 twin
the other fitted everthing else.

So in theory there should be none of the old type push caps still fitted because all motorcycle owners registerd were contacted Ho Ho!!

Also for the VERY early tanks there is a "sealing washer" kit for the cap as they very early tank cap appartently needs to be held down tighter.

I will happily supply the relevant parts numbers to anyone who emails me direct

Thanks for the info Bryan. I was going to send you a PM asking for part numbers, but as long as two of us do it, you are better off posting a reply with them. That way you only have to write it once...  ;-)

hmm...I admit, I'm finding one of these fake locking catches to be interesting.  Even if any key works in it, it still discourages stupid people from doing stupid things, right?

Actually I managed to buy a couple of the thumb latches with cap out of eBay. Each one costed me the same (shipping included) than the new Honda key lock latch (around 30 euro). Will keep them as spare for the day I decide to restore my bike to showroom condition and display it in my living room (without oil and gas)  HAHAHAHA

To answer MrBreeze's questions:

I believe the switchover to the fake lock (as I like to refer to it) occurred in 1976 or '77. My '71 750 K1 had the button type until I brough it in for an inspection in '77. When I returned to pick up the bike, I discovered the swapped out part! The mechanic explained it was a mandatory recall. Seems someone had sued Honda after they had a major get-off and the tank cap popped open and caused fuel loss & burns. Don't know if there were multiple reports of such type failures, but I do have both types on some of my vintage Hondas. I'm keeping the push button on my K0-SL350 (as well as the after-market, float style, gas guage that's inset in an OEM style cap).
As to the headlamp on/off switch, right around '76 many states began requiring cycles run headlamps at all times. I believe you'll fiind most Jap bikes after that period do not have a headlamp shut off.   I hate being so old that I remember this stuff - but like the fact that I can at least remember them!!! ;-)

OK just for you lot i got the fiche viewer out again. The recall is dated 4/17/78. The lock kit for the 350 is 17550-377-315 and for everything else is 17550-377-305 whilst the "washer kit" for the VERY early tanks that did not need the cap pushed down to move the catch is 17560-377-999 and i got several of those for some reason. Just for info a "cap kit" is 17510-323-999.

Have fun now!
