77 cb550f charging/electrical problem?
« on: August 12, 2009, 07:00:18 AM »
A few weeks ago I drained the battery  (which is new within the past year) accidentally and without knowing any better jump started the bike from car (not running).  After this it seemed like the battery wasn't re-charing so I figured I ruined the old rectifier and/or regulator.  I replaced those with a new solid state rectifier/regulator combo from Z1 and properly recharged the battery with a stand alone unit at very low amps.  After riding around for a couple weeks the battery seems to have lost charge again, enough for the electric start not to turn over.

Could I have damaged the battery somehow?  Is it something in the charging system that is no longer working?  A couple other things that may or may not be related:

-I used the high beam for the first time in a while right before this happened
-turn signals dont flash unless the rpms are high (4-5k or more).
-I noticed today that when I turn the bars to the extreme left that one of the other cables pulls the wiring harness from the ignition (the box that you put the key into)
-The plastic around the main fuse looks to be a little melted
-my rear right turn signal light is out

thanks in advance!

Don't worry about jumping the bike from your car, unless you accidentally reversed the polarity.  If you did reverse it, even for only a second, you could have killed the rectifier and some of the wiring in the harness.  Is there any damage to the insulation on any of the wires coming from the block connector that hooks into the rectifier?

Heh Jeremy, what result? I am looking at similar stuff. Melted fuse block, melted solder in fuse block! Died on highway, only 12.08V at idle across battery...

Went over as many connections as I could, under seat and tank and headlight...

  Going 'New Tech'?
