Got a problem
« on: August 12, 2009, 03:26:00 PM »
1988 Virago 1100. Somebody thought it was a good idea to jump start the bike. The hooked the cables up backwards and now there is no spark. All fuses are good. Replaced the CDI box and still nothing. any ideas?

Did you replace the battery?

Did you check for, and replace, all the cooked and melted wires that were bound to have happened?
No.

Nothing melted. Thank God. I have all the lights. It turns over. Battery has been replaced. Just no spark now. I replaced the CDI box since It had power going ion and nothing going out. I have power going to the coils...but nothing sparking. I am going to replace the coils later tonight and see whats up.

Sigh... sad demise to an otherwise pretty decent 80's cruiser.

More often than not if it isn't caught in time the reverse hookup will do all of what mlinder said and more.

Yamaha was using some nasty bad electronics then (almost rivaling suzuki in the 70's) and even the slightest spike in current would cook em.

Another thing to check besides the coils would be the fuse terminals. Make sure none are melted or deformed in the housings. If so, they will give you loads of trouble later in life.

My 80 XS850 just got a 80% rewire because of poor battery vent design.

Hope you figure it out.
