NEWB 750K3 Classic Racer Build
« on: September 04, 2009, 03:18:12 PM »
Hello once again,I have been able to take some pics but please excuse the quality as my camera broke. I bought the bike back in June, she started up just fine about six times, both electric and kick, and would idle pretty rough but soon would not turn on. All the electrical worked just fine as well. I decided to start dismantling the bike and finished yesterday.

I would like to get everyones opinion on what steps to take now that I have the engine out in order to get her to run well. The carbs are recently rebuilt and clean. What should i focus on as I don't want to completely tear apart the engine but am willing to take the neccesary preventative measures before the bike goes back in the frame.

Also since I am going for the Classic Racer look what is the best way to remove the passenger foot peg triangle on the frame? Is it neccessary to remove the original tank mounting bracket from the frame if I am looking to use a CR750 replica tank in the future? And is it ok to grind down the frame with a circular steel wire brush grinder before taking the frame to the powder coater? Sorry for the onslaught of questions.....

I look forward to getting everyones input, and possible leads during my build.

I tried going over all the aluminum covers with a wire brush attachment to see what a brushed aluminum finish would look like. Here is a pic afterwards. I went ahead and polished them up on the bench buffer as I think it looks better polished up.

I just got these in yesterday and am going to polish them up over the weekend. They look to be in pretty good condition, no holes big dents, rust or severe pitting.

looks good.

Pretty cool you zinc coated the frame.  Are you going to use a sturdy enamel paint?

The pipes were a good score!  Hope you didn't have to pay a fortune for them!  At some point the MAC 4-1's start to look better and better.

Thanks.I would like to go with silver with a black pin stripe along the tank but I think I want something with more contrast between the frame, engine and tank.

I got a good deal I'm really thinking of selling them but I think Ill polish them up sport them a while then sell them for a profit.I like those yoshimura pipes put we'll see what happens.

Gonna paint it with POR-15 blackcote. See how it turns out.

Ill keep posting pics as I move forward.

I got my frame back from the painter and he did a decent job. He covered all the areas and ended up diluting the POR-15 Blackcote with a urethane based thinner/ diluter. Upon closer inspection the gloss on the frame was not continuous and would fade in and out.  Luckily I still had one of the three cans that came in my mix pack so i went over the entire frame/swingarm with a sponge brush and gave it a coat of clear with a Rustoleum rattle can. The engine case also got a thorough wash as well as a coat of silver 500 degree paint.

I took the original boots that came on the front forks off as well as the headlight ears and to my surprise the right fork seems to have a slight bend or bow. :o I knew the bike had been down on its right side because of the points cover and pedals being scratched but didn't really expect the forks to be affected.

I have always intended to do a GL1000 front end swap but was going to gradually work my way there after I rode for a while. So now I am looking for a complete front end. ;D

What years GL1000 front ends will be a direct swap for my K3? I want to keep the spoked wheels as well.

Gonna post pics shortly..

It been a while since my last posts but I've put my tapered bearings in after breaking the lower ones in order to get them out after I botched the install. Thanks to Domer for hooking me up with an extra pair. I've got an extra upper bearing just in case anybody out there needs one. I have partially installed the GL1000 front end, Thanks to Richard the GL1000 guru for the sale, If any one knows where I can get a GL1000 front end diagram please let me know.  I have dropped in the engine a couple weeks ago and am ordering tires pretty soon. I am about to tackle the wiring and would like to hide/ remove/streamline everything as much as possible I'm using the original harness.I'll keep posting as I progress I really want to get her going soon.

I have cleaned up the exhaust some  and mocked it up to the bike. Luckily there is enough clearance  between the shock reservoirs and the exhaust pipes. I haven't completely mounted them as they need another round of buffing. I now have another issue on my GL1000 front not having enough clearance on my disk brakes?? I'm posting it up on the board right now... >:(
