Can I/should I try to weld this? Little Help?
« on: December 04, 2005, 07:25:19 PM »
Ok, Draggy was nice enough to sell me a set of K0 cable carbs, but as well packed as they were, the mounting plate thingie that all four carbs are mounted to was broken in between carbs 2 and 3 on arrival. Apart from that, they look very nice, but of course I can't use them until I get this problem sorted. Does anyone know if I can get this part welded, (probably TIG welded) or should I be looking out for another one? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry,

If you go the replacement route, there's one on eBay right now..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1969-CB750-K0-KO-Sandcast-CARBURETOR-CARB-PLATE-1970-CB_W0QQitemZ4595026113QQcategoryZ35597QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks Bob, when does it end? The damn defence department computer nazi's have blocked me from looking at Ebay at work? (It's already tomorrow here in Oz) Cheers, Terry. ;D

Terry,

Had one other thought. If welding isn't an option and eBay gets too expensive because of the stupid reference to "sandcast" on the stay plate up for auction, how about fabbing a new one? I know I couldn't do it, but when I stripped my carbs down I recall thinking the stay plate was pretty straight forward. Someone with access to the proper stock and fabricating equipment could probably duplicate it pretty easily. Just a thought.

Terry,
The same thing happened to me when I bought two sets from eBay. The seller did not pack them well at all and one bracket was in 3 pieces and one was in two pieces. I had them welded for A$50. He also linished them and it is hard to spot where they broke apart from where rhere was a recess in the casting which is now solid. I did not see him do it but I am pretty sure he used TIG.
My fall back position was to fabricate out of 6mm aluminiun

Could you use a later carb stay plate and machine off the parts for the throttle assembly? (I have an extra one you can have free if you want to do that...)

From what I have seen this plate just is a support to keep the carbs together. You should be able to weld and even allow for a small amount of deflection really. Weld away I say!

I don't like to contradict anyone living in a country where gun ownership is almost mandatory, but it's the other way around Ho-boy, Here in Oz (and New Zealand) it's already Tuesday, but I know it's still monday there in the US. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks CD, the carbs are the ol' K0 "4 into 1 cable" operated carbs, and they all bolt onto a mounting plate which is about a foot long and 2 inches wide, by about a quarter of an inch thick, and as brittle as hell. If it all turns to #$%*e and I can't get another one I'll fab one up myself from 6061 plate, and get the original TIG'd up as Clyde suggests, (and store it somewhere safe) if you've got one mate, I'd appreciate it! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Terry, I got a later carb plate where the levers to open the carbs were busted off (you can't get them separately) but the stay plate itself is in nice shape. You could probably machine off the mountings for the throttle shaft and be in business. It's just sitting around, gathering dust. If you want it, it's yours for the taking.

It took me a while, but I figured it out. (think "Manhood")

As for the part, as long as it is not "White metal'" (I have no idea what the actualy name is for that particular stuff is, but you almost never find it on a motorcycle - metal's form of particle board) you should be able to have it welded. Obviously the skill of the welder will determain end qaulity, but it's shouldn't be to hard a problem to fix.
