They will not ban bikes from the public roadways. I can see Apartments doing it, with all the open exhausts people are running, it is probably about noise.

Spot on Bobby.

i see WAY too many people here in Columbia riding in shorts and either low top sneakers or even worse, flip-flops, no lid or eye protection either. i wear either my armoured mesh jacket or my heavy and thick buffalo leather jacket for cold weather riding. i still wear just a puddin' bowl helmet but a super nice member from here has a couple of full faced helmets for me to try on. i crashed 22 years ago on a mountain bike, going down a really long (3 1/2 miles) and steep mountain road wearing shorts and a tank top, no helmet and chucks with no socks. i was going about 40 or so when i started to go down, there isnt ANYTHING worse that trying to heal up all that abraded skin, the broken collar bone and left fibula was nothing compared to the skin.

NH here. No helmet required for those 18 and older.  I always wear a helmet though.  I've seen far too many accidents where the rider would have survived, or walked away, if they'd been wearing a helmet.  I've seen head injuries where the skin was burned down to the skull.  A little discomfort wearing a helmet is nothing compared to that.

I like NH, Cheap booze, no sales tax, Live free or Die for real.

The links posted are about private communities and gated Communities where they do not even allow clothes lines. They can do what they want on thier private roads. The one about Greenwich Village is form 1992 and all kinds of silly crap comes out of there anyway.

I do not see any way to ban bikes from public roads. The most they can do since operating a motor vehicle is a privilage and not a right is to legislate some issues:

Enforce noise emissions.
Require minimum safety gear including helmets.
Require something like MSF training for licensing.
Adopt a graduated licesing system like they have in Europe. There you are limited by CC. if you have no issues at 250CC for like a year, you can move up. Here you can take your test on a 125 and go out and ride a Ninga the next day.

There is so much paranoia from some of these Bike groups. I had some dude who was long term cannabis poisoned telling me they were gonna require seat belts on bikes. Silliness reigns.

I know there is the 'coolness' thing, and the wind-in-your-hair deal, but from a functional standpoint, how do you non-helmet wearers see without a face shield, at 70mph? With my shield up sporting huge aviators, I start tearing at 60 and can barely see straight at 80. Is it just me?

Well if you notice - most of the guys not wearing helmets are only cruising at 50 -55 mph. If not they must have pretty good glasses as I agree with you about tears in the eyes...

cheers

Doc, the key word here is PUBLIC. Apartments are private, so are some parks. any place PUBLIC though has to follow state laws on motor vehicles. They can add small things like bobby said such as noise limits but cant ban them outright in most cases.

Ok, everyone else commenting back thinks it's outlandish that they might ban motorcycles, - let's hope so - I understand it seems impossible now, I'm just saying they've already done plenty that seems impossible, and in not much time you'll see more stuff you never dreamed would happen here. Impossible one would say.
I think the guy saying seatbelts on bikes was making a point, even if he was stoned out of his gourd - you didn't get the joke and leg pull.
They've banned handguns entirely in a lot of our biggest cities, most people don't even know that.
Whatever their set of excuses are, they'ell get 'er done.
They've now effectively banned smoking in public in most places.
I'm tellin' ya, nothing is safe. After the cops who used to ride police station bikes regularly die off, and CHIPS falls out of favor, watch out.
Probably the only reason we still have the privledge is because law enforcement has used/uses them. If not for that, they already be gone from a lot of public cities.
Yes, you call driving a right, but they do not - nope it's not your right - you have no right to locomotion.
Even the Aussie guy admits if they were invented today they'ed probably be not allowed/banned. That should be a heads up.
They just destroyed how many vehicles here in the clunkers program ? Government issued 5 gallon jugs of sodium silicate, into running vehicles engines - and that's sane ? They will take your bikes and crush them, and give you an electric beanie. :D

I live in NH, close to the ME border.  Almost all my riding is done in these 2 states, and neither have a helmet law.  For me, if I wear one or not is based on what I'm doing.  For a slow easy ride, not doing anything I wouldn't do on my pedal bike, I sometimes don't.  If I'm going to be dealing with traffic, picking up the clip, etc. then I wear one.  I believe it's a personal choice, like seat belts, and people should be left to make thier own choices.  If I'm running to the store in a 25MPH zone on a nice night and don't feel like gearing up, why should I have to?  I'd ride the same speeds in the same place on a pedal bike, and I wouldn't wear one for that.  It's all risk assessment to me.  If I calculate there to be a reasonable amount of risk, I gear up.  That's racing boots, jeans or riding pants, jacket, gloves, and helmet.  If I'm going for a slow putter to shoot a game of pool or hit a store in town at mild speeds on slow roads, it's not worth it to me to gear up.

If you want to wear one, by all means, you should.  If not, that's your choice, at least in some states.  I accept the danger that comes with all choices I make, and that includes getting on a motorcycle, or in a car, regardless of the safety precautions taken.

There ARE handgun bans in some areas but since the ban was overturned in DC, legal challenges have been going on it the other areas that have bans. Regardless though, a motorcycle is NOT a handgun.

Whenever I'm tempted to ride without a helmet I just think of "screeeech skiiiiiiiiiiiidddddd thump thump skiiiiiid, ooooze...". Then I put my gear on like the Sally I am.

I couldn't imagine Riding w/o my helmet even if it's legal.  That's just asking definitively not live in the event of a crash.  Some one mentioned shaking their head when they see Squids riding in a helmet/shorts/flip flops thinking whats the point.  I'm sure it's b/c they live in a helmet law state and don't want to wear it but have to.  I've got a 2000 YZF600r I wear everything but armored/leather pants, sadly I've yet to ride my CB550.  It's still in pieces :(.

The state of MN is no helmeta law at this time. TG ! I guess this is my choice and no one Else's. Everyone wants to past this law and like every other law that gets past, this take my rights away. You say this is for my protection and is for my own good. Who the hell are those to say this is in my best interest? I guess I would rather be dead, than be a veg. Hmmm, it really make sense to have to wear a helmet, but it's OK to wear shorts, T shirts, and Tennis? Were does scrapping your hide flesh off the pavement come into this law?? It doesn't! You have far more medical cost in replacing your hind end and legs, than my burial for not wearing one. Where is my freedom of choice? Where and when do I have the right to choose, rather everyone else doing it for ME? This is the USA I should have a freedom to choose without everyone telling me what I have to do, for that person's own good.

If you can be fined $2300 for not having the new health coverage if it passes, you will surely loose your right to choose to veg out. Good ole USA??? Maybe not so much.

# 1 nobody forced those dumb asses that traded in their cars during cash for clunkers. #2 as far as not smoking in a public building full of people that don't smoke I think thats great. I hate smoke, my mother died of a lung disease. If the goverment was to step in and ban vehicles of any kind I don't believe it would be motorcycles considering they are more fuel efficient than most hybrid cars. Yes, in the states that don't have helmet laws the decision to wear one depends on the rider. I will and always will wear my helmet. I honestly don't know why anyone would not wear one. I used to ride dirt bikes and had a pretty bad wreck that sent me over the bars, had I not been wearing a helmet I would have ended up with a whole lot more than a bruized kidney. A I know people are still going to ride without helmets if its legal where you are but at least think about your family and get some good life insurance.

I can barley wear my 3/4 helmet cause its makes me so nervous...

Seen a guy missing his jaw laying in the road. He was riding a full dresser with shorts and a tank top. Police were there but the EMTs were not.
Also had a small rock get pop'd up from the car in front of me. My jeans provided little resistance as it went into my leg. Could have been my face. I dont know what hurt worse, getting it out or sterilizing the hole.

I live in a college town, I see so many flip flops, shorts, and high hp bikes that still have dealer plates its ridiculous...

"Cam chain, dont know what that is but my dad got this sick bike that will do 190, bro"  ::)

Full face, thank you.

There have already been attempts to ban motorcycles in Chicago.  That was more about rich Gold Coast residents not wanting to be disturbed by the noise, but the attempt was made nonetheless.  This was defeated by the fact that one cannot ban an entire class of vehicles from roads that are funded even in part by federal dollars.

Years ago when I was an ABATE member, I rode to a rally in Springfield IL.  As we were getting ready to roll out I started pulling on my helmet and one of the other guys said to me "Are you gonna wear that brain bucket?!?"  as if I was strapping on a dead cat.  I looked back at him and said "Freedom of choice, right?"  He had no reply.

I don't always wear a helmet when I ride but I do so more now then when I was younger.
