CB 200/350/500 gas tank on 78 750k
« on: September 28, 2009, 12:32:04 AM »
Im doing the cafe thing on a 78 750k and I'm wanting to ditch the ugly tank. I like the looks of earlier cb tanks and see a few cb350,200 tanks on ebay. I've read on here that any 750 tank should fit on my bike. Im wanting to know if the smaller cc tanks will fit my frame. Sorry if this question has been raised before but I couldn't find a answer by searching.

I know fr sure a 400F tank will fit. If I remember right 340 and 450 twin tanks do not unless you help them fit with a hammer.

i'm going through the same thing right now. i have a 78 750k and want to ditch the tank. i've tried a few other tanks i have laying around. early 750, 360, and 550. i can tell you those are not a good fit. the problem i've encountered is, the petcock lands right on top of the carbs. haven't tired a 400f tank (those might be the hardest to find), but i still have to try my friend's 350/4 tank.

last night i tried a 350/4 tank. it actually fit good and the petcock didn't hit the carbs. if your going for a cafe look, that would be a great tank.

I happened to have a tank off of a 72 Suzuki gt750, you know the 2-stroke. The petcock from it does hit the carbs but i think I can get the cb750's petcock fabed in. My opinion is that it looks really good, it fits pretty well just a little bigger than stock. Might use this if I can't get an F tank.

Here's a pic of the tank mocked up with my bars sittin on the bike. Just giving me an idea. Looks like they won't hit.

Is it to chopperish lookin?

Funny you should ask about this; I just bought a cb200 tank for my 750 project earlier today.

Kev Nemo here on the board used one on his and I think it worked out quite nicely: http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=11410.0

The lines of the tank flow well with the frame, and the cb200 tank allows for more of the neck of the frame to show which I think gives it a unique look.

Everybody hating on the phat '77-'78 tanks.  Give it a few more years and it will be all farings, king queen seats, highwaybars, and tanks with gas flap doors again.

That said, I went out to garage and snaped a few pics with a naked  "78 750K wearing a few different tanks.  A '73 and up 750K with the two bolt petcock setup works nicely.  The earlier style that screws on does not (tried this when I had the tank off my '72.  Move the seat to the front of the hinges and it comes together ok, otherwise it is short by an inch or so.

The first and next to last pics are the 750K3 and the seat hinges are last.  The second pic is a 350Four - looks like the petcock would be a problem to me.  Also tried a CB450 DOHC, and a CB500.  Neither of these fit the frame very nicely.

It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.
