Jerry, Castrol GTX 20-50w sounds great, thank you!

Two Tired, I don't have an owners manual and figured there might be something better suited to a 33-year old bike than what the manufacturer suggested way back when.

Depending on where you are in Hawaii...
It's hottish for sure, but not crazy hot like Nevada in August. You don't have to worry about cold flow, anyhow.
If you're not regularly stuck in Honolulu traffic, I would say any motorcycle specific oil would be great, Honda has oil but it's relatively expensive. If you can find bike oil at an auto store or whatever that should be fine.
If you do a lot of traffic riding, I think a full synthetic would be desirable; they handle high temperatures better than standard oils. Amsoil motorcycle oil is good, and cheaper that a lot of the bike store stuff like Motul and Spectro.
use the weight recommended by Honda, you can go a bit higher on the bigger number (ie 10-40 instead of 10-30) but don't go thicker or thinner on the low number in my opinion.
Sorry about the initial response you got, oil questions bring out some strong opinions.
I suggest that you avoid asking about religion, politics, or gun laws on the open forum as well....

Make sure to look up oil coolers while your thinking about oil . Cooler threads are just as much fun as oil threads . Change your oil often and put the used stuff in your lawn mower . ;)
Why is it that poor old lawn mower always gets it?..........you know....the old gas....the used oil........ ???

I use Castrol 10 w 40 motorcycle oil. Its never gave me any problems in my 74 CB750. I would not use use synthetic in these older vintage motors, although some do. The Honda manual specificley says Castrol 10 W 40 or 20 w 50. I bought a 1997 Honda XR400R brand new and never ran anything but Honda synthetic in it. It never gave me any problems but then again I changed it about every 2 or 3 rides to. I use to do a lot of ridingon it in places with some pretty deep mudholes. Like everyone else said its not that we don't want to help the other guy out but everyone has their own preference. Just pick a good grade of oil and stick with it. Oh one other piece of advice you can order your filters from Advance auto parts and they're alot cheaper than the dealer. I use a Fram in mine. When you change your filter don't throw away the little thin washer that will stick to the filter. The spring sets up agaist it to keep from damageing the filter. Last but not least download the Honda manual from the top of the forum it will save you time and trouble.
