Well, I disassembled the motor today to replace the lower O rings and found another issue on the way. The head gasket had a fair bit of oil on especially between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 at the front of the engine. I think this means the head and cylinders were not mating up properly. I put in slightly shorter dowels, made sure the head and cylinders would touch without the gasket, reinstalled the gasket and torqued it to 175 inch pounds or about 14.5 foot pounds, right in between what the manual says. We tried a compression tester but that didn't work too well and found I had to use a thread chaser in a couple of spark plug holes to clean the threads. I called my friendly Honda expert and he suggested a leak down test so I asked/begged him to do it since I have no knowledge on this test. This may happen on Wednesday. This is aging me rapidly. Further updates as they occur.

didn't you have the head and jugs planed so they mate up cleanly?
I also remember reading some info about the valve cover mating surfaces being planed because they weren't perfectly flat from the factory.

I had the head planed but not the cylinders. I'm just going to cover it up and back away slowly for now until the test on Wednesday. I'm getting grumpy.

God, do I know that feeling. I could tell you how I burned up 500 plus dollars in NOS parts over Christmas vacation. The SO has never seen me rant a rave ever! Doors were slamming and I had to sit in my garage for time out.

I used the throw things and hit things with a hammer! When I broke some bones in my hand punching a wall I finally figured out that it was an expensive way to vent. I'm a slow learner. Now I cover it up, put my tools down carefully and back away. Then I go sit in a corner of the yard. When my wife sees this she knows not to ask 'What's wrong honey?"
Time outs aren't as long anymore but it took a long to get this far.

Hurts to discuss, but here I go
1.) NOS Sprocket Cover (Index 040) - While modifying the the back side supports to accommodate a larger counter shaft sprocket, I broke a piece off it. It fit back together fine with a small noticeable crack in the front. Would not have been to bad if I had just JB welded it. Instead I took to have it Tig welded. I tried to explain the circumstances but the guy burnt right through it making a mess. Luckily, I found another that day on Ebay for a Buy It Now price of 69USD.
2.) New Yamiya Lens for my Instruments. This one hurts bad. But the bottom line is I destroyed by getting adhesive on the front. So, I am using the originals.

Simpson,

If they are palstic lenses for your K0, the ruined finish can be sanded and buffed back to new. All it takes is time and wet/dry grades of sandpaper. Finish with the Novus platic pollishes. I know how much those lenses are, thay can be saved!

Did a leak down test on my engine and #4 seemed to leak a bit more than perhaps it should but the mechanic that did it said it should be ok. At least the head gasket was not leaking. Whew! He did recommend to torque the head to about 18 pounds and that he regularly torqued the 750 motors to 20 foot pounds. This is with a motor that has been run yet and quite oily. The best bet would be to run it for awhile and then do another test when things have settled in. So, back to putting the valve gear on and waiting for the polishing to come back.

Took the Goldwing and 750's outside to show them that there is a sun out there. The wife said it may be time to insure the Goldwing! Suuny/cloudy and around 10C.
Set the tappet clearance on the project motor, installed the oil pump and oil pan. As soon as the valve cover comes back from the polishers it can go in the frame.
Need some more flat 6 mm washers.

Take her for a ride on one "just to show her what it's like". If it's a cool day make sure her seat heater is on. Find a radio station she likes. Just roll the throttle on and you may get the bike sooner than you think. It's amazing what a nice bike it is for a friggin' bemoth. And, it's pretty fast and quiet - you can hear the fuel injectors at work.

Not to break up your thread even more, but we are taking a motorcycle trip through California this spring. She selected the ST1300 in light of the curves and wanting to still have fun in the corners. Plus it was cheaper to rent. Perhaps we should test drive one at the local dealer.

The ST1300 is a nice bike. We had an ST1100 for a couple of years and felt it was a bit tight for us. I'm 6"3, 210 pounds, my wife 5'3 and about 120 pounds. There was no shortage of power and the 1300 is lighter and more horsepower. The Goldwing will handle the twisties too and she will be more comfortable on the Wing but the 1300 will be a lot of fun. They do give off a lot of heat I've heard.
Have you seen Yellow Wolf at the Gap on a Wing? Amazing!

Yes, he's quite a legend in the Goldwing forum. The cameraman was on a wing too. I'll try to find a crazy still shot of the two of them and post it. He rode like that once with a car tire on the back, they call it going to the Darkside. I've pushed our Wing fairly hard but not a good enough rider for that. Guys regularly drag the pegs and other parts.

Finally got my engine covers back back from the polishers so I can get going on the motor again. The valve cover is not great because of the age of the stains I guess. The road rash on the dyno cover is gone so the motor will look much better. I know the cases are TOO shiny but I like the look off highly polished alum. So, some progress today. of course after installing the starter motor I decided to take off some electricians tape on the wire to the solenoid and what should I find? Bare wire -dammit.
