Bill,

Now that Big Jay has gotten fired up again maybe he needs to top it off with pins. I'm sure he'll be here shortly.

We offer our tool steel pins as an option in our 970 / 1000 kits.

What about GSXR1000 pins? The rods fit into a CB650 and the pin bore is the same. I would think all newer pins are lighter????

My 2 cents. Pretty hard for any pin in an oversize piston to be lighter than stock. THe best you can hope for is that they are as light as they can be and still be dependable.

The stock CB750 pins are 40grams+/- (63mm) . My ARIAS pins for 67mm (888cc) are 41.5g and they are tapered.

To actually be lighter, I'd guess they'd be much more expensive.

Thanks. FYI My 63 and 67mm are bore sizes not pin lengths, but its all relative.

OK so I measured mine and they are 52mm. So once again its all relative. FYI: the external lip has a slight taper, and the internal taper stops well short of the center, i suspect that's true with all tapers, putting a full wall at the point where the rods.

I did a comparison on a thread about a year ago and my 888cc kit, piston rings and pins weighs within a small amount the same as a Wiseco 836cc kit. I'm happy with my relative weight. Just need to get these suckas into the motor and RIDE!

To actually be lighter one would have to go to titanium or such, wouldn't you think? Or a very thin wall.

Just so you know the JE pins I spoke of are out. I expect these were the same as the wiseco parts, lightweight but without hard chrome. MRieck has a connection for pins and is waiting to hear back from them....thanks Mike.

I did get an e-mail back about titanium pins. They are 0.200" wall thickness with a DLC coating and weigh 39grams @ $99 ea. Also with these pins if there is no small-end bushing he claimed the rod will quickly wear through the coating.

The pins I received with the pistons are 44g, I'm sure I can do better, but am running out of options. If Yosh could offer some in the seventies, surely someone can today.

I'm trying Brent. The guy who may...and that's the big word...may engineer them is very good. The big thing is his supplier as he doesn't want to be a middle man.

guys,

I'll do a quick 3D CAD model and let you know how much weight you could gain (in theory at least).

working assumption will be indeed that there should be no taper in the central 24 mm of the pin so its full section can resist the shear forces.

Will let you know.

yes, my modeling gives also something like 3-4 grams per pin. Maybe a bit more if its a really thick walled one

not bad, but Brent, I wouldnt loose too much sleep over that either.

 :D

As I mentioned there is a little that can come off these new pistons, plus I was hoping for 8-10g's less per pin, but... maybe that's a pipe dream.

I'll see what shakes loose in the next little while. Thanks guys.

Any GSXR owners able to measure wristpin length, maybe weight as well?

Well I took Kayakers advice and ordered a GSXR1000 wristpin. I had a funny feeling it would be shorter in Suzukis search for less weight. Nice tapered pin but way too short at 45.4mm and 38g, I need 50mm. It is even shorter than a CB500 pin.

Two pix - Gixxer left, then stock 550, Wiseco polished 2-stroke tapered pin, and mine on the right.

Not sure I have the guts to use the Wiseco piece as it's not hard chromed but the lightest at 36g.

I wonder if Mec would let us know the length of your 1000 tapered pins and where they are from. It could be shortened from both ends and reduce that 39g nicely.

MRieck if you read this I still have my fingers crossed your guy will surface, but probably unlikely and that's ok.  ;)
