The best $100 A guy could spend
« on: November 05, 2009, 07:26:43 AM »
So over the weekend I found this gem sitting it someones storage for the last 25 years. The man was asking $100 ( really ) and I gave it to him without thought. I have an earlier post trying to figure out if it's a 69 or a 70 but figured I would post a pic since I finally have one of these great bikes. Thank you to those who answered my other post. Appreciate the knowledge and friendliness of the people here. I couldn't be happier!!!!!!!!

$100?! Good for you! Now I hate you!  ;D I just spent $100 for a pair of sidecover badges.
Amazing how many of these pop up in great condition.

$100.00 bucks for a bike which is stored more than 25 years?
You must be a rich man.

My advice,...store it the next 25 years, too and then sell it for $200.00.

Congrats,...nice find!!!

well story goes...

2 owners before me a few days ago. so theres these 2 guys ( friends and next door neighbors ). One guy goes in late 69 and buys the bike new. He puts 2,600 miles on it and is kind of afraid of it. Well he parks it in the garage and doesn't move
a few years pass and the neighbor asks the original owner if he wants to sell it cause it just sits. He sells it to the neighbor (2nd owner ) He said when he bought the bike ( April 72 ) that the exhaust was rotted out already. He buys the Jardine 2 into 1's it has now. He buys a pair of mirrors as well a new tires and some oil changes. He puts another 8,500 miles or so on it ( 11,191 now ). His wifes brother  ( I think ) has a bike and gets into a crash on it and ends up dying. Well the guys wife obviously is scared of her hubby having a bike now. So the bike gets parked in 1983, never to move again until I got it. Title, key, and the old green cb750 shop manual come with the bike. Neither man mentioned any recalls or anything.
The cases are replacement unnumbered diecast. Frame vin is 7852.  It does need its share of work, but I am just very fortunate to have found it. It's really all I've thought about since I got it. I know it can be $$$$$ to restore one so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm just a janitor so I don't make the kind of money to put into it to make it perfect 100%. I might just make it a lifelong project, who knows.

My real problem now is going to be finding out what parts are correct for it. It seems to have all the good stuff like the side covers, ducktail seat, finned ft caliper, color matched airbox, individually-cabled carbs, cut front fender, recessed ignition and key with plastic barrel on it... and so on,  BUT of course no pipes. Not surprised, not complaining!

Chrome is going to be my biggest challenge I think.

I plan on spending all day Saturday enjoying it.

Man, what a find!!!!

The only thing that bikes need is 1K for new exhaust, tidy up a little here and there, and off you go!!! That bikes deserves to be ridden in as much original condition as possible.

Rub that chrome with some aluminum foil you might be suprised.

The bike needs more than an exhaust. You know pics sometimes arent fair. Its a little rough. Rear rim is very bad. front rim is respectable. Both fenders have pits. I'm hoping a rear fender isn't special like the cut front fender. Anybody know??????????  What about wheels???? Gonna need a side cover, the seat has a rip in it and is hard. It needs a hardware set in a bad way too.  It really all depends how far one wants to go. I dont have a lot of dough ( I know you dont either ) I could just make it into a respectable rider and slowly accumuilate parts. The whole problem is that doing a bike is like washing a car. If you just wash certain parts of it, the rest really show their age. Then you have to wash the whole damn car!!!!! I'm just excited to get started.

I've never heard of the aluminum foil method. I'll give it a try. sure can't hurt.

Don't worry if you can't afford to restore bike yet.
Just work on getting it cleaned up and "stabilized" so it won't deteriorate any further.
As long as you've got a warm, dry place to store it you're ok.

Just make sure that if you decide you don't want to restore it goes to someone who does!
Whatever you end up doing I think your $100 investment will be repaid many times over.  :)

You could sell it as it is today for about a kajillion percent profit.

BTW might want to get replacements for both side covers, and put away the originals somewhere safe.  I think some people have had their K0 covers stolen.

Be very careful removing the plastic parts.. DONT HESITATE to ASK for ADVICE.. I usually oil the rubber a bit and gently pull out the corner with hands/arms against your chest, so if it pops out a bit, it wont go so far you break the cover..

i got a 69 back in about 98, had to pay 5 times that and it was real dirty.. had.. Jardine 4-2s as well.. ;D

take your time on this one, hope you got another to ride..

Quite a few folks will be reading this and say to themselves, "Why not me". ;D  It is a great score for you, congratulations.  This is how these things are found, through a neighbor or friend or just plain luck.  A deal like this would not last 30 minutes on CL.  There is no rule that you have to restore the bike if money is tight.  Just repair what needs to be done, clean it up and get it out on the road and enjoy it.  Preserve it for now and upgrade/restore it over time when you can afford it.

Yes . Take your time. Go easy. Dont rush out buying things that may be rare! You may have them already! You will have to spend some dough on cleaning items. Make sure your significant other understands what you have been blessed with(kindly). Clean something Gnarly for her with your new chemicals.(SIMPLE GREEN) Does it turn over with the kickstart?  Please take your time. You will be very happy and welcome to sohc4.net

Rust in chrome, if is not deep, is easily removed with WD40 and "steel wool" -or whatever the correct name is-

Has anybody ever heard about what a "white elephant" is?

A "White elephant" is a term to describe something extremely rare and valuable, but at the same time, extremely costly to keep. It is like inheriting a Picasso's paint. Feeling lucky at the beginning, it may easily ruin you for the cost of insurance, environment adaption of your house etc.

This guy must have been lucky to find this bike, but at the same time, it may have become a "white elephant" for him. Restoring it to original condition, if only for replacing parts, will probe costly. Somebody has even suggested replacing the sidecovers for replica, for fear of them being stolen.

Would you be happy to score a bike like this, and then not enjoying it for fear of being stolen?

I would say, sell the bike at a big, big profit, and with the proceeds, buy another bike not so coveted so you will enjoy it more, and spend the remaining money in yourself, or if you decide to keep the bike, keep the broken sidecover, the broken seat, keep everything, clean and polish a little here and there, and run the hell out of it, and if someday you discover your bike has been stolen, you won't feel that you have been stolen a fortune, a white elephant.

You will feel you have been stolen $100. That's what the bike was worth when it was just a piece of junk in somebody's barn.

awesome find, i got mine for $150 from  guy who didn't know what he had, now I have less than a grand total wrapped up in it and couldn't be happier. Gotta love some of the "numbskulls" that think they are gonna make a buck when they are selling them so cheap.

Enjoy it I know I do and finally I have the means to do what I want with it. Stock, custom or a fully mod job, it is yours and make it so. Gotta love being the third owner of a 40 year old bike, Mine is a 77 and I am the 3rd owner of it fairly stock but I will own a few so I can mod them to my liking. Next on the list is a 400F(god willing I can find one) or a 550.

I have been bitten hard by the honda bug and will pass it on along with my enthusiasm for the riding(and driving) lifestyle. good luck on your endeavor.
