Best rim/tire size combo for CB750 with GL front end
« on: November 09, 2009, 01:46:53 PM »
Don't flame me I have done alot of reading (and shifted through many topics) but came up with no real concise data. I have a 1975 CB750 and almost have all the parts to convert the front end to a GL1000. One disadvantage I found to this would be that the forks are a little longer. I had been toying with the idea of getting an 18" rim for up front (with the stock forks) to make the bike handle a little sweeter in the corners. It seems to me now this would be a great idea with the GL1000 front and then slip the forks up .5" to 1" into the trees. My question is on width of the rim/tires. From reading I found that changing one effects the other and going to big can have a negative impact on the handling of the bike. So do the bikes really benefit from getting wider rims put on or do they really shine with the stock width rims? If I do stay with the stock width rims I have read that a 110/90 up front and a 130/90 in back is a popular choice, is this also correct?

The more I am reading the more I am getting confused. It seems that some are running wider rims but using the same size tires. What is the reasoning behind this, strength?

I am considering the same for one of my projects..........although with the larger tires because I already have them on standard rims and they work great.  The wider rim will put more 'meat' on the road for braking and mileage but will tend to be slow to carve a corner.  Lower profile may help.
