Hehehe. How did I know you were gonna say that Spikey?  ;D

It looks like you got a '79 there. Nice choice. We have 2 '80's. One done. One was going to get done but has turned into a parts bike for the present.

Be careful on carb kits. There a lot of places out there that will say 79-82 are the same, but they aren't. '79 and '80 are the same PD carbs, after that they are CV. Soos on here has experimented with different carbs cuz these are not user friendly as far as making adjustments. You may want to consult with him. Mlinder was going to do an experiment with us using a Suzuki GS550 set, I think it was, but we never got that far yet. The air/oil filters, oil bolt... are the same for a few years though and are common to other bikes of that time.

The charging systems suck. Period. It is well documented through Kit's  (and others) threads.  ::) Go have a look. Hers is working well now but we ended up going to Oregon Motorcycle Parts (Tony Weeks) for a new reg/rect (charges at idle now) and had the rotor and stator rebuilt by a guy in AL. (Tim Parrott) Look up "hot start issue" to learn more on this crapper of a system. Clean every connection thoroughly and use dielectric grease. You're gonna need all you can get from it.

As for the bars... the fuse box is right there in the middle of all that. There are a few guys who have moved it and changed it over to blade fuses. That's another nice mod to do if you're gonna put clubmans on or something like that.

The bike is nice to ride and gets up and roars once it's tuned in right. The maint parts can be hard to find cuz, like I said, much of it was only good for 1 or 2 years.

There is a 650 registry here and I suggest you go introduce yourself and your bike there. The guys are good about getting back to you on questions re: this particular model, just make sure you put cb650 in the thread title.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!!  ;D

(Now tell Spikey to put down the 4 beers he's guzzling and help you with that bike.  :D)

What kind of solenoid did you go with? There is a very good replacement one a guy on ebay makes. A lot of us CB650 owners have his solenoid setup. It's so much better than OEM. (we made lots of mistakes with our cb650 but some decisions came out good the 1st time and that was one of them :D)
Don't get the Motion Pro throttle cables. They don't work out right. The length is a little off and they don't have all the hardware on them to snug them to the adjuster. Ya can't add nuts afterwards either when you have to put them over the ferule.  ::) We try to save when we can and get cheaper but good stuff but that was one time we should have spent the extra on OEM.
I just got some carb kits from motorcyclecarbs.com for our 2nd set of carbs. They were about $8-10 cheaper than anyone else per carb, including the popular ones one feebay. It took less than 2 weeks to show up. (although it may have been quicker but we never remember to check the mail more than every 5-6 days, so who knows  :P)

Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with on that bike. We don't see many '79s on here. They are hard to come by. The price was definitely right. Good score!! We have spoked rims on the running bike and comstars on the parts bike. We are gonna switch them eventually since Kit likes the comstars better. Her bike is staying very stock. Mine, if we ever get around to it, (cuz I'm currently working on a '69 CL350 Scrambler) will go brat bike style and will get the spoke rims.

Have fun with it and drink lots of beer. It helps with the amount of swearing and cussing you are about to embark upon.  ;D

Very good price if the bike is in any kind of reasonable shape.  Spikey sure knows hus stuff so you're in good hands.  Post some "before" pics when you get the chance.

Oh and sorry but if you try to eat my brain imma gonna have to re-kill you.  ;)

me too  ;D ;D  .. it's gonna be all stock motor-wise , since the 650s are kinda the redheaded step child CB  .. so pods are out,  i kinda like the stock 4 into 2 , but might change the cans

the seat's gotta go, rear fender's out, bars too ,keeping the passenger pegs right where they are (for once) .. not really sure about anything else yet

i hope i can build something cool, or at least make a bunch of custom parts  from it, to sell
