Need a little help.
« on: December 12, 2009, 01:38:51 PM »
So I began tearing apart my 550 engine. I have an issue or two I'm not sure how to deal with. I was trying to remove the cam shaft. I loosened the adjuster as far as it would go clockwise. I then Tightened the lock nut so it would loosen the chain. Unfortunately it didn't work. The chain is still really tight. I tried to turn it looser but to no avail. So then I thought I would just remove the cam gear. Engine wouldnt turn over all the way so I pulled the intake manifold to check valves and of course one is broken. I can only loosen one cam gear nut and cant get the other. I thought about trying to removed the sump and remove the connecting rod cap for that piston, but I am not sure that is really going to work either. Any suggestions.

did you pull the spark plugs? makes the engine easier to turn.  I just tore down my 400, and found turning over the engine with a socket on the "Timing nut" on the right side was the way to go, I also had to remove the cam gear nuts to get the shaft out. are you sure the cam chain adjuster is not froze in position?, it should give you a little slop when loostened- but you still have to pull the gear to remove the cam.

good luck.

you may want to assume that the cam chain is shot, so why not just cut the chain, end your problems and order up a fresh one? If you are rebuilding the top end, a new cam chain may already be on your list.

I thought about that. Hoped for another path, but Probably the easiest solution. Thanks.
