Nooby needs help. 1974 cb750 head removal...
« on: December 19, 2009, 05:36:52 PM »
removing the head on a 1974 cb750 for the first time. I see some (almost comical) bolts between the fins on either side of the head. I have to assume they have to come out. The cam is out, rocker arms off, and there she sits... Does the cradle for the cam have to come off to get the head off? If so, the bolts that appear to hold this piece down won't completely come out due to clearance.. Im a little baffled.. Can you help?  ???

Yeah mate, take the cam towers (cradles) off, remove the rubber pucks and you'll see more nuts, plus there are nuts just beside your spark plug holes. From memory there are about 12 12mm stud nuts, plus a couple of 6mm hex head bolts fore and aft of the cam chain tunnel. The head may well still feel like it's stuck on, but that'll just be the head gasket sticking both surfaces together. Try "rocking" the head off as opposed to wacking the fins with a hammer, or you'll bust some fins for sure. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Those bolts under the rubber pucks may have phillips looking slots in them but they are also hex headed. Mine were soaked in grease and I didn't see the hex head, I had almost given up when the crew here clued me in.

Thanks guys! I got it off, thanks to you two. The valves are really bad, and so are the pistons and rings. Cylinders look fine, and the bottom end is in great shape. I am going to purchase a rebuild kit. Any suggestions on a good one, or a place to purchase?

G'Day Mate, well EBay is always a good option (lots of bargains this time of year) but the old favorites here are Z1 Enterprises (Jeff is a member here) Service Honda and David Silver Spares, CycleX, etc. Have fun! Cheers, Terry. ;D
