Hi Howell
the main thing is Yrjo is safe and well !!! Well done for getting him out on the track,
but as you say, you need to give the bike a very good check after an off.
I had a bit better luck at East Fortune, i had 5 races 2 on Saturday and 3 Sunday.
Race 1 Saturday i was 3rd next race clutch burnt out
Sunday race 1 flat battery and the next 2 races i was 3rd place in them both,
so all went well and am looking forward to Assen in 2 weeks time, i will also be bringing another Rider
with a 500/4 with those awfull 4 open meggas on !!!!Then we stay in Holland and Belgium
and will see you again at Oostende..... My friend is called Dave Martin.
Col

Hi Colin,

Nice results, but continue that on Assen is difficult ;D
I have already heart from Dave by Gerrit.
But no open meggas for him on Assen , 102 decibel  max !!
See you there.

Start of the race at Hengelo , typical dutch roadtrack with an old mill.

A very nice Cb500 with engine from the same tuner as we use , but stock CB750K carbs.
Our bike is faster  ;D

This week I made some modifications to the bike.
First new oil hoses , no more (goodridge) with swivels.
Also  I changed the throttle lever into a throttle lever with pull and push cable instead of a single cable.
Yrjo had the last race problems with a sticking throttle , coming out of the narrow corners at the roadtrack.
This a throttle lever of a Yamaha R1 wich I found secondhand on the internet.
The biggest modification is the front brake.
Now we have a replica Fontana 250 mm brake instead of the Honda replica 230mm brake.
A friend of us has made several years ago a serie of 15 of these brakes.
These are the best frontdrumbrakes you can buy.
We wanted this brake already before we bought the Honda replica brake.
He sold in those years 11 of them and had 3 of them in his own bikes and one as spare.
When I was building the bike I asked him to sell me his spare brake , but he wouldn't do that so therefore we bought the Honda replica brake.
But fridayevening I got a phonecall from him that he was willing to sell a complete wheel with this brake in it,because he had to many racebikes and he has the intention to sell one of his bikes in pieces.
So we were the first lucky ones to hear about his plan.
We could trade in our wheel with a extra amount of money , because he has also the intention to build a Honda race replica bike and therefore he needs a Honda brake..
The feeling of the new brake is so different with the Honda brake , it feels like a diskbrake , you only need one finger to brake.
So up with these modifications to Assen next weekend to the Ducati clubraces where the classics has an open Dutch championship race.

Dutch Open classic race at the Ducati weekend in Assen on 30/5

Friday: We went to Assen ,nice weather there , Colin Stockdale (forumname :IOMTT9) was also there and he brought his friend David Martin with him.
David's bike was equipped was four megaphones and made to much noise , so he had to change the compleet exhaust systeem into a 4 in 1
David left , Colin right

Saturday: Also nice weather.

First qualifying , the classic championship riders were divided in two groups together with all kind of classic italian race and road bikes ( Ducati/Italian event)
But most of these riders have no expirience on racetracks , many of them are riding different lines.
That makes it dangerous for the expirienced riders.
The bike was not running good , missed 2000 rpm's , the result 21 place of 39 riders.
I checked everything on the engine and found two sparkplugs with a black colour the other two looked good.
So I changed all four with new ones.
The new frontbrake is tremendous , Yrjo said it feels like a modern discbrake.

Second qualifying, I saw Yrjo only the first lap coming through.
And that where we were afraid of happened.
He was crashed , hit at his frontwheel by an 'amateur'  on a roadbike who missed the apex of a corner.
See the black spot on the frontfender.
Yrjo was not injured and the bike had some small damage.
Scratches on the fairing  and a broken front brake lever.
Positive thing was that the bike was running very well again after changing the sparkplugs.
So 21th startposition for the race next day.

Sunday:

Race: The weather forecast said that a lot of rain would be coming and they were right.
Ten minutes before the race very heavy showers with stormy wind.
The track was like an river.
Therefore the race was shortened from 10 to 8 laps.
Yrjo made a bad start , almost last.
Afterwords he told  , he couldn't see the starting light very good because another rider blocked the sight on the light , so he reacted to late.
But during the race every lap he took some places helped by the speed of the Honda and by other riders who crashed or had mechanical problems.
He finished on 12 th place  , I think a good result after the bad start and the horrible weather conditions.
But there was a man from the UK , called Colin Stockdale , who finished at 5th place.
He felt like a fish in the water.
What a man , the night before drinking and dancing till midnight and then this result.
His friend David finished on the 20th place.
They stay this week in Holland and go to another dutch classic race in Belgium Oostende , where we meet again.
I hope that it is dry and Yrjo can finish in front of that 'oldtimer'. ;D

The results:

1 40 Niek Leeuwis 8 21:28.224  2:35.779 8 105.149

Hi howell

good to hear that yrjo got to the finish line! hats off for colin of course.

Got to say that its really strange to hear about that mix of bikes/riders hitting the track together.

Dont know how is it in NL, but in our championship, there is a strict 112% qualifying time minimum (from best rider lap time) exactly to avoid too slow riders on the track together with fast ones. Dont you have something similar?

Nice work. Glad to hear that bike and rider passed the checkered flag in one piece.  With these old bikes, regardless of how meticulous the preparation, that always seems to be a challenge.

That gap, 12 mph top speed and 23 seconds best lap -- what would you attribute that to?  Do you think there's some speed left in the bike that Yrjo will be able to exploit as he gets more comfortable with it?

In any case, I'm rooting for you.
Take care,
David

wet races tend to spread out the field, some people just dont get on with wet racing, some are like fish in the water. tires become important too, more draining thread design = more grip. even at motogp level, the differences in lap times in wet races are big and often there are surprise winners.

Hi TG,

Only at this event , Ducati clubweekend, they put them together during practice.
But they had there own race.
The 112% is also a rule in our championship.

Another 'Duck' race in Oostende Belgium.

This weekend we had two races in Oostende at Sunday.
When we arrived friday there in the afternoon it was beatifull weather.
Colin and David were still there.

Saturday:
Again beautifull weather conditions , sunny and hot.
2 Qualifyings:
Both without any problem , but Yrjo was not in the mood, worked last week many hours and was tired.
Also it was a new track for him , it is situated in the streets of the harbour of Oostende and along the sea.
A very long straight and many slow corners.
17th place on the grid was the result.

Sunday:
We were waked early in the morning by the rain on the roof of the camper.
The weather had became very bad , heavy rain.

First race: It was raining very hard and the track was like a river.
So another 'Duck' race.
Yrjo finished the race in 9th position and was satisfied after the bad practice.
But the engine misfired sometimes because of the dampness .
I cleaned everything and sprayed some WD40 over all electrical contacts , to keep the water out next race.
Again that man from the UK, Colin S. finished as 5th.
He's indeed like a duck in the water.

Second race: I saw Yrjo going as latest in the first corner , I don't know what happened , he had a good start.
The bike sounded very well , first round on the last place , but Yrjo shaked his head , wat was wrong ?
But every round he took a place and finished as 10th place.
He was not complete satisfied , the bike ran very well and he felt also like a duck in the water.
But the left rubbergrip got loose from the clipon just after the start before the first corner.
That's why he was the latest in the first corner and lost a lot of time to push it back.
But again and again the grip came loose and he had to push it back many times every lap.
Cause: I had sprayed the Engine Off button at the left clipon with some WD40 spray , to avoid coming water in it.
But the spray leaked out of the button between the grip so that the grip slided from the clipon.
Yrjo could probably have finished in the top five after seeing his laptimes later on.
But again a lesson for the next race.
Today I have glued the grip on the clipon and put some wire around it.
But after all we were both satisfied , two top ten finishes.
Colin was again fast in the wet , but made a mistake by braking for a corner and went straight on.
I think he finished as 12th now.
Next race is in Oscherleben Germany on the 5th of juli.
So four weeks to go , but in the meantime I go wednesday on holiday to Croatie and will be back wednesday for the race.

 Oostende track

Honda of Colin's dutch friend Frank Lemstra who had a stucked piston ring

Colin making the pistonring gap wider with the old broken ring

Hi TG,

Those challenge tests I don't like either , but it happens.
It's a long period between the races for you.
But also for us ,4 july oschersleben and then the next one 28 august.
Maybe we do a race in Belgium at 16 july.

http://www.motorsportarena.com/default.aspx?ID=63

Rene, how did Yrjo perform ?

Sam. :)

We performed not good.
It was very very hot in Oschersleben , Germany, 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) on saturday during the practices.
The tarmac was 60 degrees.(140 F)
Oschersleben is a very technical track , Yrjo had problems to get the bike trough the corners.
The bike wouldn't steer as he wanted , he couldnt get the bike on the lines he wanted.
Result 16th place.
Therefore we made a big change fot the second practice and setup the bike at the rear 2 cm higher.
This made a little difference, but still the bike was not going were he wanted it.
Yrjo was 3 seconds faster in this practice but that didn't help because everybody was going faster.
All the guys were worn out because of the heat.Yrjo was complete dizzy.
Result of this practice 17th place.
Starting place 17.
For the race on sunday we made another change to the setup and lowerend the front.
Race on sunday:
The temperature was now a 27 degrees C because of a shower in the morning.
Yrjo made a very bad start , I saw him starting as latest.
But the next lap ,he had already passed five riders.
Second lap he had already lost this places again and more riders passed him.
His laptimes went slower and slower I saw on the monitor , what was wrong ?
He finished as penultimate.
Cause: The clutch didn't work smooth at the start , no slipping but immediate grip , so the engine went down in rpm's and he had to declutch to get more rpm's to get away.Overheated ?
In the second lap he missed suddenly 2500 rpm's , max rpm was 8000 instead of 10500.
So he missed power and speed because of misfiring.
Yesterday after inspection of the electrical circuit I found a bad connection socket at one of the coils.
Tomorrow I will repair that and will see if the engine will run good again.
But the change on the setup before the race was the right one , the bike went the direction Yrjo wanted.
So another race with up and downs , but that's racing.
Now up to the next non championshiprace in Chimay , Belgium on 18 july.
There we hope for a better result.
