how to remove bushings from swing arm?
« on: January 01, 2010, 03:23:40 PM »
I just got my swingarm off my 1974 350-4 and thinking I was through I went in the house and picked up Clymer where I see thrust bushings, felt rings and pivot bushing that are still in the arm.

which brings up 3 questions

1. How in the heck to you get those suckers out without destroying them?

2. If you do destroy them are they available?

3. I'm having the frame blasted...do I have to take them out/ (can I cover them in some way the blaster wont..well, blast them?

I'm also going blast my frame soon. My idea about the swing arm, is to insert a bolt and put o-rings with a nut on both sides.

Smart?

That's a good idea. To the origianal question, pretty hard to get them out without destroying them. The usual advice is to cut a notch in the length of them with a hacksaw blade and beat them out.

Don't know if they are still available for the 354. For the 750 they are.

I have a set coming for my 750. Could you get a piece of pvc pipe or something that just goes and drive them through from one side? Don't know, just asking.

The old ones, especially if the newer style steel bushings, have become one with the swingarm pivot tube. Cutting a long slot to relieve tension, and driving out with a stout (not PVC) drift like a long steel punch, or fragmenting from the same side with a chisel is about the only way. Requires a medieval attitude. They will only come out on their own respective sides as the pivot tube has a shoulder that they seat on.

Thanks Ron, I've not started into it yet but your info helps. I want to get past my carb issues before I tackle the rear.
