Check the "jetting" link in my sig.  That thread contains whole lot of tuning/jetting information, including a substantial discussion of cylinder head temps and the effects of jetting.

I picked up this sucker yesterday with a 55% off coupon. Plan is to try to tune the carbs using heat temperatures.
If it doesn't work, I can go back to shooting it at my dogs nose to get his temperature readings.
Think it was about 26 bucks with discount. Not bad!
Better than touching pipes, burned myself 10 times last season.

That thread is huge, I looked for 10 minutes and gave up.  :o

I guess you won't be learning anything from it, then, huh?

Perhaps not... After 15 pages it just seemed to be the Pod Vs. air box battle.

Search for thermometer when you're in that thread.

For that matter, search for thermometer outside of that thread and you'll find a bunch of useful information, too.

Yep.

Found it on page 4... You did some interesting testing. Good work.
Plan is to help fine tune air screws if possible to balance the four equally.
My jetting is pretty good. I adjusted it for months and months last year. It was exhaustive.
Not to say, my jetting could not get better.  ;)

China is a big place. They make some absolutely excellent tools, but they're not easy to find and cost almost as much as the good German stuff.
The name brand China-made tools you get at Lowes are probably equal to the older USA origin ones, but the ridiculous cost of labor in the USA has sent most factory jobs overseas.
Tell that to a union man and you'll get a lecture and/or a fat lip. I suppose it must be better to lose (forever) a $30/hr factory job with a full pension and medical insurance than keep the same job for $15/hr with way fewer benefits... and keep some manufacturing capability in this hemisphere. Once China has eliminated their competition you'll see their prices go way up.

You're kinda greedy at 15 an hour, people in Asia work for 15 a week. How about it? Wanna compete with that?

That is your comment, Don.

My TWO cents... is that 2 cents goes for a lot less in most places, than the places your speaking of, Don.
I wouldn't call it greed.

I'll try to turn it less political and maybe keep it human.

The Chinese like money now.  They like it more now than they ever have.  They will like it even more next year.  And the year after that.  And so on.  Soon they will be just as expensive as anywhere else, and there will be no price pressure on labor from China.

BMW has opened its first plant in China.  Chinese like BMWs, too.

I have my doubts that you'll find the correct metric fittings included with your tester... have you looked into that?

Hey fmctm1sw, did you have a chance to try the leakdown tester yet? I wanted to find out if the fittings worked, or if you had to get/make an adapter. I am interested in getting one of those testers myself.

Thanks!

Just to follow up...  It worked fine out of the box.  I did my 750 today with it.  I was pretty happy with it.  Leakage was at around 15% on all my cylinders except #4 which was at about #35%.  :(

Whenever I need a coupon I Google......"harbor freight coupon thread garage journal". Last pages of the forum always has up to date 25 percent off coupons.   Also whenever you see a coupon in a mag, take a picture of it zoomed in enough to not show the sizzor marks....if you have them on the picture they sometimes give you a hard time but will usually always take them either way....if they say youu need ths actual paper coupon tell them the manager last time told you  to take a picture.  Always works

I needed some of those cheap $7.99 4 wheel dollies to hold some engines and did not have a coupon I had seen in a cycle mag. The store guy said to call my wife and have her look and get the code which I did and they accepted just that with no paper.

My mom is one of the most frugal people you will ever meet and she would love that nail unbender. I was once working on their house and the nails my stepfather was giving me kept bending, granted I was trying to nail into oak rather than pine but these nails were bending way too easy so I ask my stepdad WTF is with these nails? He grinned at me and said those were old nails my mom had straightened out.  :o

Wow.  I remember starting this thread.  And oddly enough I found the 2 yr extended warranty yesterday in my garage while I was cleaning.  The air compressor has held up just fine.  I still have the leakdown tester too.  Those coupons are hilarious...

My father-in-law is the KING of Harbor Freight tools. He probably owns 1 of everything in that store. Occasionally I will indeed use something of his and my opinion is, its all relative. As long as you are aware that the stuff either works or doesn't, you wont be disappointed. On the other hand I have a 3hp 60 gallon "PUMA" air compressor that I got from a store called "RailRoad Salvage" (which was a privately owned version of HF) about 10 years ago, and its still going strong. I also have a set of "Grey Pneumatic" impact sockets that are about 10 years old and never has one cracked or broken, even under the stress of my IR titanium 1/2" gun.

Craftsman is also 90% China-made. Matco is mostly made in China, good tools.

Taiwan produces better quality than China (they've been at it longer and have more refined processes), so you shouldn't question buying a Taiwan tool. Just do some research on the China ones because there's some good stuff as well as some bad stuff. Most of NAPA's service tools are made in Taiwan. GM Performance tools is also Taiwan made.

Several machinists from a machinist form tested Harbor Freight's 0-1" Digital Micrometer. They found it to be just as accurate and trustworthy as their $400 micrometers in their shops. It's $36 at harbor freight. Get it.

There are some GREAT harbor freight tools. The Stud Welder is also another great tool that is rock solid. The bearing/race/seal driver kit is also a great kit at a good price.
