Every thirty years some country comes pouring over your border a 45 or two might discourage them.

Yep.  A 45 or two is pretty cheap insurance.  If it prevents just one deserving life from being lost, it's worth it!

64,999,987 firearm owners killed no one yesterday.  FYI

I picked up a Streamlight Super tac flashlight yesterday.  Man that thing is bright!  i highly recommend it.  Any flashlight that you can point at the sun and hear the words "turn the #$%*ing light off!" from outer space has got to be bright.
I farted and made my son cry.

Since I'm here, I have an AMT Stainless steel 45, I haven't shot it a lot yet. It's called a hardballer, I've read that is because they only work well with round nose ammo. Rather than fix the issue they named it that and pressed on. True? I have also read the quality greatly depends on what year they were made due to the factory going in and out of buisness and moving around.
The next time out I will try some semi-wadcutters, my brother and nephew re-load and it would be nice to be able to try their loads and make up some of my own. My nephew was shooting a taurus until an old buddy lent him a custom Les Baer 45, he jumped two competition classes that day. He thought he just shot lousy, Now he got a Les of his own.

The firearm laws have always been tight here in Australia especially with hand guns.
There was a reasonable amount of flexibilty with long arms until Martin Bryant went berserk at Port Arthur in Tasmania 10 years or so ago.
No more semi autos or pump actions.
It did create a lot of hysteria about (in some circles) an Australian Government (John Howard) conspiricy behind the shootings to justify the banning of S/A's and P/A's and was a set up to make Bryant look like the bunny.
A guy by the name of Joe Vialls wrote a book called "Deadly Deception at Port Arthur" which strongly disputed the forensic evidence that convicted Bryant of the mass murders.
It was a very convincing read.
As time has passed, the "hysteria" has died a natural death.

The Kimber factory is not far from where I work. We were given a tour and they turn out some sweet target pistols.

Mick, I do hear what you are saying. The laws are not uniform in the US. Some States are tighter than others. I think this thread is better on a technical level. It seems we have some expeinced people here who can share tips and experience.

I was a little bummed at the range yesterday.  The first ten rounds through the gun I had my target at 30 feet, my rounds were hitting 6 inches below where I was pointing.  With the target at 15 feet I was still hitting 1 inch below point, that I can live with.  I would like an adjustable rear night sight.

My .45 has fixed sights. It will put 230gr. ball right where it's pointed. Light bullets print lower.

i have my conceal carry pistol, the Taurus PT145 im stainless with the polymer frame, i have a Ruger GP100 .357 with a 4 1/2" barrel and the pre-war Walther PPK .32 auto. the Walther was taken off of a German officer near the end of WWII, it was my dads, when he passed away in 2003 it became mine. i dont shoot it much and i keep the holster and belt in a nice soft, moisture and dust proof case. i am looking to get a new deer rifle this coming yesr so i can start hunting again, i have my sights set (pun intended ;D) on getting a Ruger M77 MK1 in 30.06. i want the MK1 because thats the only M77 to have iron sights, which i prefer in 95% of my hunting situations.

i've been meaning to ask, where did the word "gat" come from?

Edit: the name gat came from shortening the name "GATling gun, which eventualy led to ALl types of firearms including rifles, pistols, machine guns or shotguns. the first weapon to really get to be known as GAT is the Thompson Submachine Gun

So far my favorite pistol was my EAA Witness AKA the Tanfoglio Combat chambered in .40 S&W.  It had the "Wonder Fiinish" with fixed sights.  It was an inexpensive pistol, I think I paid $330.00 for it new.  I put a set of Houge grips on it witch completely melded my hand and the gun.  That was the most naturally pointing gun I have ever held, I reworked the trigger to smooth out some of the grittyness, reworked and polished the feed ramp and polished the throat to a mirror.  I wanted to lighten the trigger pull a little but never did.  I switched the mag release button to the right side of the pistol and found I was quicker with mag changes.  Another cool thing about his gun was the manufacturer offered caliber conversions for all of the calibers.  Check it out.

i'll be looking at grips for the PT145 before too much longer, the gun, as it is from the factory, is just a touch short for my giant meat hooks.

When I hunted I used a 30.06. Like the .45 it is one of those magic rounds that just work right. I agree with you on open sites. In areas like we live all shots will most likely be fairly short range and quick. Out West with wide open areas, long shots are more common so you would use a scope.

most of, if not all of the hunting here in south carolina, is done at less than 100 yards, especially where i hunt, in thick woods. anywhere theres' white or red oak you'll find deer. i used to hunt with a .270 but i found that on the largest bucks the .270 didnt always do an immediate knockdown. the 30.06 gives the ftlb of force needed without too much drop. i know alot of hunters here that will scoff at anything less than a 7mm winmag but that is just not necessary in a place where a 200 pound buck is almost never seen. i've actually thought about going to a henry golden boy in .45 LC so i could have both my handgun and rifle using the same round. but thats a ways down the road. how long is your deer season BobbyR? we go from august 15th for buck then september 15th for doe with both going until january 1st we have a large, TOO large a deer population here.

We have different hunting seasons here depending on the zone you live in. I live in a County just North of the City so it is Bow only. That runs from Oct 16 - Dec 31.

Once you get further North it can start as early as Sep 21 out through Dec 31. The phase in the dates, Bow starts early and then their are special seasons for muzzloaders.

The Deer that are overrunning us down here are huge since they are not heavily hunted. I mean huge and they have no fear of you. If I have an early morning class at Rail yard, I walk right part them eating the apples under my tree. One  Doe looked like a good sized Pony.

I do not hunt anymore for personal reasons, but we need it here badly and would support a longer season. The State snuck Coyotes down here to help control the poulation. Now, people are losing Cats left and right and small dogs are being killed.

Rather than fix the issue they named it that and pressed on. True? I have also read the quality greatly depends on what year they were made due to the factory going in and out of buisness and moving around.

I have one I bought when they first came out, so it is an early one.  I cast my own bullets and use the Lyman 452460, which is a semi-wadcutter.  It has always fed those without a hiccup.

As I recall, the reason AMT called it the Hardballer was that it could stand up to hardball ammo.  At the time, the only other adjustable sighted .45 on the market was the Colt Gold Cup.  Full power hardball ammo was not recommended in the Gold Cup, as they were set up for target ammo.  Springs in the GC were lighter, plus the GC frame was a little different from the standard GC in those days, thinner at the slide stop hole.   The later GC's have the same frame as the standard gun.

It was a marketing thing for AMT.

I have done some research into getting a pistol of some sort to make a return to target shooting. I used to do it a lot with .22 rifles when i was younger. Went to semi local gun range during the summer and fired off 50 rounds with a Glock 17C. Not a bad shooting gun...but its bulky as heck. As a result of that experience im looking more into standard capacity 1911s and revolvers due to smaller grip. The revolver i have looked at the most is the Ruger SP101 in .357 Mag

Dark rider. If concealing is your thing the 1911 will be thinner than the Glock. Get a commander size. I have a full size 1911 too but the commander fits better. An extra clip is even slimmer. I have wanted a ppk for along time but have never shot one. I think they may be the perfect size. Im not talking about knockdown power. I think a hit with a 22 is better than a 45s nick!

Concealed carry is one thing i am considering but another thing is me being able to actually hold the weapon. The problem with the Glock is i was concerned the thing was going to jump out of my hands under repeated shooting. Apparently i have smaller hands then i thought lol Thanks for the heads up on the commander version of the 1911.

I have a PPK and it is nice handling, the .380 i s not terribly powerful, but you give that up for concealability.
