Projects around the house - DIY how-to's
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:26:39 PM »
I am closing on my first house this month (hopefully) and I know I will have a ton of projects pop up over the coming years that I will have little knowledge how to complete. I am a DIY type of guy and as long as I have some guidance can pretty much anything do anything I set out to. My question to all you home owners that have hopefully been through all this before is where is 1st choice for help for around the house projects (excluding google)?

Obviously google is a great source for finding info but hopefully you guys will have a forum, magazine or blog that you turn to first. For example I come here for all things honda before hitting google or other forums.. heck I hit this for non honda stuff a lot of times as well. I am hoping there is a great DIY home maintenance site out there with a killer forum like this one.

Thanks.....

i recently downloaded a NICE file over TONS of DIY articles for home owners.

it's called the complete DIY manual.  it's like 26 MB.  if theres a way to post the file for download on the forums, i would be happy to do this, if the mod's would allow that.  otherwise, PM me with your e-mail and i'll get it sent to you through gmail.  how's that sound??

i'll e-mail it to anyone else who would like it as well

You can also start watching the DIY channel or check out their web site.  They have some great tutorials and the shows walk you through many of the basic fixes you'll most likely end up having to do.

Good luck and congrats on the new home.

When we started our endless reno's, building etc the book that we turned to mostly was the Readers Digest book on fixing and rebuilding things.

good luck with closing on your first money pit.  :D
My wife and I are on our 3rd house in 12 years, hopefully our last, and i found the best source of read-it, see-it, do-it is your local Lowes/Home Depot Saturday am demo's.  seeing it done, and then getting your hands dirty doing it before you head home to start is a HUGE +.
They typically have a schedule of demos listed at the store.
Learned how to (properly) tile(did 2 bathrooms, kitchen), and install hardwood flooring(did our whole first house).

Flybox beat me to it, learned some good tile setting tips on a Saturday down at the local Home Depot and my kitchen tiling didn't turn out too bad.
