My first drop/crash.

:'( :'( :'( :-X

Down here in Texas, it's a chilly 78F. I thought "I should be a man, like Terry, and brave the horrid weather to join in the camaraderie of the lifestyle that is biking." After all, what else is one to do on his day off.

So off I go on my CB 350f to cruise my neighborhood. I live in the Hill Country, with a mix of gravel and paved roads, a heck of a lot of twisting and turning backroads, and enough deer that there's special insurance for your cars. I need the practice with stops, turn signals, and all that.  Anyway, I'm cruising around 30, 40mph, gawking at the vacation homes and watching for my four legged friends when I make a turn and find myself face to face with a steep hill. Steep. If it were a cup of tea, it'd be coffee.

I'm in too high of a gear and not enough momentum, so I try to shift down, and the end result of me slowing, mis-shifting (is that a word), and easing off the gas, leave me perched uphill at an awkward angle. Awkward as in, how'd I end up in this dress and covered with Easy-cheese, and just who are all these women, and what am I doing on this glass elevator.

Okay, no big deal, just ease off the break, and I'll back down, and... I start to tilt over. No big deal. I throw out my left foot to steady myself... and it lands right in a pile of gravel. Crap.

The next thing I know, I'm ten feet down the hill, looking up at my bike, which is on its side with the engine dead and gas slowly trickling out of the top of the tank.

Not a lot of harm done really. I bent the peg, and the shifter arm. I've already bent those back to a workable angle. The clutch lever is pretty bent. I can still use it, but I'm not happy. My front left turn signal impacted, and the bulb decided it was time to blow. No plastic damage other than a scratch. The bike had obviously been dropped before, but on the right side. Well, at least both sides match now.  ::)

Pictures to come.

-Dave

:D Embankment, hill... (cough) it could have been. ;) I feel a little stupid to have gotten in the perdiciment really. At least it wasn't a collision with a deer.

And yeah, I'm not hurt in the least. I'm lucky.  :)

Well that'll teach you for trying to ride in the depths of a Texas winter, Dave! But geez, you must be a tiny man? I'm talking Dustin Hoffman in a cowboy hat and spurs?

How the hell otherwise do you fall off a 350/4? Man, I restored one back in 1996, and if my foot lost traction, I'd drop onto my knee, and still no Honda parts contacted the ground? Are you really from Texas, or are you an immigrant?

Fess up shorty, you're amongst friends with our own dirty little secrets............ Ha ha, glad you (and the bike) are OK mate, Cheers, Terry.  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hehe. I'm 5'5".  If the seat were any taller, I would have serious trouble touching ground. I'm taller than my folks by an inch or two.  ;D

Glad to hear you are OK and the bike suffered only minor damage. Looks like a nice bike, any other pics?

Glad to hear your ok........Willy Wonka call and ask when you'll be back at work?  :o :D ;D

Lets not scale all the Texan's based on Daves stature btw......Some (Me) have over a foot on the errr....vertically challenged amongst us.

Since I own a 350F I gotta ask........how does it ride when one actually fits on it?

I look like a monkey having carnal knowlege with a football riding mine...but its fun!

Well I'm only 6'4" Tim, but i was "rapt" in the top end speed on mine, it'd pull a genuine 100 Mph, and sounded plain evil! Trouble was it was a little bit lazy off the line, and the last straw was when a crappy Mitsubishi Magna (front drive #$%*box) beat me off the line, not once, but three times!

Ah well, it was all for the best, it now lives in a Mercedes dealers private lounge-room, seems he had one as a boy in Germany, and he had tears in his eyes when he picked it up. (although that could have been something to do with the price, ha ha!) cheers, Terry. ;D

Guess we're the pair to take to the rockers vs mod's rumble.........

Although if we show up on 350F's there would be some confusion as to which side of the fight we were on.

You have to love'm though.....like a fine pocket watch.

And I was considering taking mine out since it is above freezing now!! At least during the day  :(

No worries Tim, but only if you teach me how to wheelie a 750!  ;D

dave... so glad to hear you're ok.  my first spill was much dumber!... a slight mist had covered the road and i managed to make it 20 miles home.  the last turn onto my own road i was thrilled that i'd made it... a bit too much gas and broken pinky toe are all i could ever think about thereafter every time i rounded that corner.

hey cheapo... i thought you lived in texas... did you move recently?

Oh Dave, sorry for the Kee-bosh, partner, but "been there, done that" (see thread "BB Bucked me off"-and yes, watching the gas leak out of a 485 lb bike that I cannot pick up is s sickening feeling!

Hope you are A-OK-quite frankly, I'd be dead without that sorry-a** Harley helmet I had on!  So there in one good thing to say about Harleys-helmets can save your life!

and I bent my brake lever about 10 degrees less than yours!

AMazing how fast those "slight inclines" can just mess up your best plans!

As they say, dust yor self off and "geet back on that bronco, pardner!"

Yeah, I thought about riding around a bit more after the spill honestly, but then I told myself that I didn't break a finger or toe, and it was time to call it a day.

Linda,

LOL! And here I was wishing for the mountains. I'll be back out riding in no time. :)

:o     :D  For a second there, I had no idea what you were talking about. Indeed you do! I hope I get to come on up there some day. I've got a pal who thinks I should get a heavier cruiser before I attempt that kind of distance though. I'd really like to take a road trip all the way up to Yellowstone in the future, but I'm not sure how far a 350 will go (without me not being able to walk the next day.)

Go for it Dave, if I was your height and build, a 350F would be fine for touring! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Glad your'e ok. I had a very similar incident 2 weeks ago; I had to ride 40 miles back home after I dropped it, that focuses the mind!

Hi Dave... hope I didn't jinx when i recently told you about me dropping my 350 against the side wall of my garage with my knee in-between to save the chromey bits! That was a case of "I think I've put the side stand down... oh #$%*e...!" Dented my speedometer though as that and my knee took all the weight :(

I'm 5'5" too and  even from a 45 degree angle I had a problem getting it up... ( and I can say that because I'm not a man.. ;))

Sounds like yours was one of those horrible slow-motion drops where you know it's happening but can't do anything about it. At least the end result wasn't too bad and you're not injured, except a slight dent in the ego perhaps.

Carmen

P.S. Kghost.... love the avatar can I have a go..? I challenge you to show a pic of someone doing a stoppie on an unmodified seventies SOHC4.... ;)

It's sure tempting. I have a pal at work who works on bikes, etc, and he's trying to get me to chop it and make it a hard tail with a solo seat, replacing the rear shocks to deal with the shift in weight. The question is... would I look like a total clown?  ;D
