What am I missing here?
« on: February 25, 2010, 07:46:13 AM »
I'm building my 550 up from (old!) parts and I've just put the back end together. I seem to be left with this 8mm gap on the back axle?

I can't see any more spacers on the parts fiche. The swingarm and wheel came off the same bike and I'm pretty sure I've put everything back where it should be. Should I use the axle to pinch the swingarm together?

Here's the other side; have I done something daft?

Yes the axle nut piulls it together, if there is a gap like shown it is easier to get the wheel and spacers in.

 However, you may have a problem on the sprocket carrier side. Remove wheel and check that the STEPPED SPACER is in the carrier.. if you leave it out it will wreck a few things..

I'd prefer you take the more experienced members' advice over mine, but my anecdotal claim is that mine also springs out a little when I loosen the axle.  I just tighten the axle down.

But your adjustors in the bottom pic do seem a little too squeezed.  Like maybe they belong to a different bike or something.

Thanks Chaps, very helpful.

754, which is the stepped spacer; I'm worried now!

Well spotted. I just checked the parts fiche and the part number for the adjusters for the F model are different from the K. The mounting points on the K swingarm are 14mm compared to the F's 8mm so it looks like these adjusters are off a K. I could try and track down some now discontinued F adjusters or I might just use some washers. What do you think?

I dont think the adjuster hurt anything, cept looks..
 The stepped spacer;

 Most roller bearing assemblys have spacers between, to set or eliminate preload, which can hurt the bearings.

 On your sprocket carrier there is a spacer that goes into the bearing in the sprocket carrier, it is stepped as they use a larger ID bearing there. Then there is a portion of the spacer, larger diameter that projects inwards, that contacts the hub bearing.

 Usually a bit oily or greasy, they do somethimes fall out or get misplaced.

Ah ha, thanks for clearing that up; I checked it and it's ok.

I reckon four m20 x 3mm washers, one each side of the axle mounting points should eat up 6mm of internal space and make the wheel a nice snug fit.

Thanks for your help Guys.
