Maier side covers
« on: March 01, 2010, 02:58:06 PM »
I really wish I would have read previous posts about these before I bought em.  One side fits perfectly, however there is no way the other cover will fit over the oil tank.  Oh well....I can probably modify it to make it fit, but I really shouldn't have to for what they charged for em.

Yup.  There was a thread about these recently.  I have Maier side covers.  There was a lot of cursing before I got them to fit.   >:(

Looking at buying a set for a 78 750K8.  What did you have to do to get them to fit?  Force?  Trimming?  Witchcraft?

The 500 ones fit ok.  8)  Though you have to trim a bit if you don't want them touching your pod filters.

For my 77 750K I had to trim a bit on the right cover to get it to it over the oil tank.  The left side fit perfectly.  Also, you will have to drill the holes yourself in order to mount them.  Just FYI   8)

I got Maier side covers for my 750 F1. They worked, after modification, but that was about it. I didn't like that they were screw on instead of the stock method. Then I found Low Pressure Moldings. Far better product. Higher price, too, but in this world, you get what you pay for.

I bought the LPM side covers for my F1, may be better than the originals.

Definitly better than the originals. Probably better than the originals when they were new, but i wasn't around back then to tell you for sure.

Unfortunately, LPM does not seem to have the 78 K8 side covers.  Guess I need to go the David Silver route...

Got mine from David Silver spares. They are the best. Also you can get the grommets two oval one round each side. Don't lose a new cover because of sloppy grommets.I got my grommets from Honda shop.

It looks to me, and I'm no expert, but the CB750K7 side panel looks the same as the K8. That and the part number is the same (not in the URL, but on the page: P83700-405):

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750K7-FOUR-1977/part_29544/
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750K8-FOUR-1978-USA/part_29583/

They are the same as this part as far as I can tell:

http://lpmreplicaparts.com/honda/CB750K7/sidep.html

I've said it before but I have a sneaking suspicion that DSS gets their side covers from LPM.

Contact forum member AlanF and talk to him about the aluminum side covers he makes... if you think you might want aluminum ones, that is.

Awesome to hear Bill K.  I sent them an email asking about compatibility, but I guess I can order without needing their response.

Great info and people around this board!

Don't bother. They're cheap - they FEEL cheap. The company pretty much sneered at me when I told them it didn't fit. Spend the money, get one that does fit.

Stogie, I thought I had a stock set from a K7, but after a quick look today I didn't find them. I can dig a bit deeper tomorrow, if you haven't already ordered some. (no guarantees that I still have them, as I moved twice since I took them off the bike)

Wow, yeah I have not ordered yet (waiting for confirmation from LPM that the K7 will fit the K8.  I am in no hurry and am happy to pay fair value for them if you have them.  If not, no worries, the LPM will fit I am sure.  OEM is always nice, though  ;D

Turns out I only have a left cover. It's in pretty good shape, no cracks, but the PO drilled out one of the emblem mounting holes, and added another hole to mount an emblem from a different bike. PM me if you're interested..

I bought a set of Maier and they were junk! The plastic cracked like crazy around the drilled and mounted holes in the tabs. I had to get some washers and JBweld them into place behind for supprt and to stop the cracking!
