GAS MASK HEADLIGHT - lenses to use??
« on: March 04, 2010, 12:50:49 PM »
HEY HEY!  I found a few pics of these around the net...and now I'm addicted to the idea!  I want to make one for my bike.
I have the gask mask I want to use sorted out..... but I'm looking for a proper set of good n' bright lenses/bulbs to put in the front.

I heard about a "fisheye" bulb....of sorts, something like on the front of the 05' ducati 999's or something similar....like a 2" diameter??  One for each eye.

My thoughts are to take out the lenses of the gas mask...and "adjust" the openings to fit just around the bulbs....and mount it.   One eye for low beam....two eyes on for high.

What do you guys think?  And any Idea where to get some small "lights" that would work?

Cheers!

The bike on the right has one.... this is the pic that got me started on them.... tooo coool   ACE CAFE!! WOOOH

one on a Monster....and HEY! If you look close...he has the bio-hazard symbols on the bike...just like the gauge faces I made for my K8.... Wicked!

another...

and a close up....

If somebody had any ideas...it'd be greatly appreciated!!!!
Cheers all!

What do you mean "old school?"  The gas masks we use in the army are older than that one!

Ahaha!!!  Sorry guys... I haven't actually done it yet... Because I'm such a cheap ass....I'm waiting for an excellent deal on DOT approved lights that will fit a mask.   (the little ones are expensive!)   But I will be rockin' it for next year...

The gas mask I was thinking of was the Israeli GI mask.... just because I can find them for around $20...and they're symmetrical.
Also really like the look of the canister off to the one side though!...so not sure yet.

I think it'll fit well with my Bio-Hazard bike theme!

Cheers!!

Glad you posted a pic of your bike, I was wondering if your bike was tough enough to pull off the "look" otherwise it would look just plain dumb on the wrong bike.

Your bike looks way cool and tough enough to pull of that look.

Great job on the bike.

I'm off to find your build thread.

I personally think it looks ugly as hell, but . . .

these lights might work:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/headlight-motorcycle-cafe-racer-motorcycle-cafe-racer-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53e2380bbaQQitemZ360277609402QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_861wt_912

Ahah... yeah It's totally a personal preference thing...I'm sure most will either hate it or say "BADDASS!"  :D

Those lights are a little big... need something in the 2.5" range.  I shall keep on looking!~

I'd be concerned about bulbs and/or housings becoming so hot they they soften or even melt the gas mask rubber.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

I wouldn't worry about the gas mask rubber.  Perhaps it would be easier to buy an automobile headlight and remove the reflector.  Cut/shave it to fit, then seal it to the eyepiece of the gas mask.  The rear of the reflector will allow you to use auto headlights.  From there its just up to you to pick whatever style of lights you want.

I bet you could find a half decent set of headlight reflectors that you could cannibalize for really cheap at a pick and pull.  Just my $.02

EDIT:  Or, could you make something like these work?  http://www.jcwhitney.com/platinum-burners-55-watt-clear-lens-driving-light-kit/p2023274.jcwx?filterid=c2811o40j1  2.5" diameter

thanks a bunch..

If you're doing a biohazard theme bike, you should get an emblem/ decal made for it that reads "MOPP Level 4." (Mission Oriented Protective Posture)  Level 4 just means you've donned all protective gear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOPP

Then all you'd need to do is to figure out how to get an NBC suit over your bike.  ;D

I like it. You could go with generic automotive fog lights. Heres a set for only $25 bucks.

But also a side note is you might get crap if your state requires inspections...

Cheaperthandirt.com also has deal on surplus gas masks from time to time.
And, bizarrely, Amazon is a good place to search for surplus stuff.

I say you find the headlights you want to use and then have Franken build a plastic gas mask for them. He could sell a lot to those "street fighters" guys.

Street fighter? In my experience with those guys, the street has always won.  or telephone pole.

when I Purchased my first bike last October('91 GS500) I came across this idea and really got involved with it. Bought the mask and almost bought the lens too. (until I came across my '96 900ss and couldn't pass on the deal, so I sold my GS500)

One and VERY IMPORTANT thing I learned on my re-search and I think you should also take in consideration... (these are threads I read from people who had actually done this project to their bikes.)

**DON'T BE CHEAP ABOUT THE LIGHTS.... (The cheap ones will get condensation in them, meaning water will start to show inside them.)**

Here's what I was going to invest if I did go forward with the Idea. It's not expensive and it will hold up against any weather...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/UNIVERSAL-P1S-CLEAR-PROJECTOR-FOG-LIGHTS-FOGLIGHT-KIT-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2561b4f3d3QQitemZ160553038803QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

If you type 'Projector Fog Lights' on ebay it will show up.

also, this video made me crave it even more...

dont mind the douche bag in the video. (idk who he is)

 :P.

let me know what you think.
