350F oil filter bolt. I never noticed this...
« on: March 14, 2010, 06:14:32 PM »
I sure hope this "check valve" and associated spring and pin is somewhere inside that bolt.  I don't recall seeing that on either one of my bikes...

It's common for the spring and washer to be missing.  Many PO's didn't realize they were in there and dumped them out with the old oil.

Do you mean 11 and 10?  I'm talking about 14-16.  But yeah, I'm missing one of those  washers as well.  Actually, that is what I was ordering when I saw the stuff on the bolt itself....

I don't know that I've ever seen the parts inside the bolt come out before.

Kind of wondering about this myself. I think the washer was gone.

I took a parts bike apart last night and made sure to keep the whole assembly together. I figure use it as a guide for the first one's  reassembly  but maybe it's missing pieces, too.

Look closely inside the filter bolt and you'll find them.  They're in there....guaranteed!

Kind of important; if the relief valve is missing the oil will not be filtered. Oil will bypass the filter all the time, not just when the filter is allowed to become clogged with dirt.

I was kinda concerned I might have no washer behind the spring, and I never saw the smaller bits. Do they fall out when it's opened up?

Anyone got a measurement on the size of the washer and is it easy to replace with something around the shop ready to modify?  Just a washer like any other or is there something OEM about it that makes it special?

It's a specific Honda part.  You need to order it from somewhere like David Silver.  It's actually quite important, without it the oil pressure can drop.  It usually sticks to the filter & gets tossed out...

14 & 15 are held in the bolt with 16. It does come apart, I had one with a broken spring on a cx500 that I fixed.

Never took 14 & 15 apart in 30+years just fit new bolt as they come with it, the big spring and washer that go over the bolt fitted loads as PO's dont notice them

so the assy goes bolt, spring, the washer, place filter on top or sring and washer then on top of the filter the hollow tube spacer on that then it gets srewed on like that? I just changed my oil and put it in like it came out, it was i think that collar then the sping then i but the filter on top both of them. Wrong I guess? Tell me the correct placement of the filter! I drove it a little yesterday, I hope it was not with any oil pressure!

+1

I am always really careful when dissasembling stuff to have a clean floor, so if anything goes a tumblin' i can find it.  Not seen anything come out of the bolt, ever. I recycle my oil as well, and when pouring it out of the pan, ive never had any "leftovers".  My next oil change ill have to inspect my bolt closer.

Finally getting around to this stage and I remembered reading this old but goodie thread, and a mysterious washer that is not present in my filter assembly.

Would this "washer" be number 10 on bike bandit's chart for the oil filter assembly? They call it a "Seat, a,2a."

Also it there any reason to disassemble the bypass valve or any way to check its operation?

I took one apart. The spring & cap are held in with a roll pin.
After I got it apart I determined that it wasn't worth the effort. It was kinda a #$%* to reinstall the roll pin.
Any gunk that's in there can be blasted out with some spray carb cleaner.

Here's a picture.

THanks.

Maybe redundent, but re-reading I think for sure was in order.  I need to get to the honda store for #10, or perhaps another internet order is forming.

Great getting back to this project, it's close enough to start putting oil in it and roll it over and see if it circulates, but I thought I better find this old  thread first, before putting the new filter on.
