CB360T Scrambler
« on: April 15, 2018, 07:42:19 PM »
Not a SOHC 4 but I thought I'd pop in here and mention that I'm doing another Honda CB build.

I received a free 1974 CB360T today. I brought it home, laid everything out and shot a quick video. Plan is to build this into a scrambler. I'll be sharing progress on the hondatwins.net forum and on my YouTube channel.

Nice.

I was just wondering this evening about the possibility of doing a scrambler build.

The project board doesn't have to only be SOHC4's. But also feel free to have a thread for the build in the "Other Bikes" board.

There are several really cool non-SOHC and non-Honda builds over there.

I'd keep the build thread here, since there's more views on this board and it IS a project.

The 360 twin seems like a good choice for a scrambler.  Light and thin (comparatively) and easier to handle on gravel, sand, dirt, fire roads.

There was a cl360 factory scrambler...I think the main difference was just the high mounted 2 into 1 exhaust and handlebars with a cross brace and different shape seat.

to be honest, having fun in the dirt is all about crash-ability...not much point if you can't dump it in some mud, get back on and laugh about it
If it works good, it looks good...

Let me know if you need parts. I parted out 4 360s recently. 1 cl and 3 cbs. I still have a lot left.

After some research on the internets I've discovered that the forks are 33mm and that the 83-84 Honda XR200R is a good candidate as a donor. http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_xr200r%2085.htm

21" front wheel with longer forks. I'd give up the disc brake but hey, it's a Scrambler! :)

Also found out from the Hondatwins forum that the two stamped dots on the engine number means that it had the rocker and timing chain tensioner recall done at a dealer back in the day. The bike only has 5800 miles on it and by the looks of the engine I believe it. No oil leaks and it's clean not "cleaned up".

Currently shopping on Ebay for front forks and aluminum wheel assembly, and an aluminum rear wheel. The wheels I have are pretty rusted and heavy steel.

This is going to be a fun project because I already have a good engine to work with! The CB750 was quite an undertaking. EVERYTHING was taken apart on that bike.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

So, I got a few bits from Ebay coming my way. Forks and a 21" front wheel from a 1983 Honda XL200R. Looking at rear alloy wheels and might buy a 18" from a 74 Honda XL250.

Heading out on the Ducati to Hendersonville NC for the Meltdown Vintage Bike Show this weekend. Next weekend another HAW video will be in the works! :)

Got a few parts mocked up. The extra long forks are good for prototyping, may end up with something shorter. Wheels, 21" front, 18" rear. Rear is blocked up to simulate a 150/70 dual sport tire. Frame height under engine cradle is 14" right now, no engine weight. Pretty high...
Might need the triple clamps from the XL200R as well, or similar. Based on the wheel from same bike the forks are set too far apart in the CB360 triple clamps. Got an alloy rear wheel from a 74 XL250 coming my way by week's end, with a tire which will help with the mock up and planning.

I figure I need rear shocks with a 3" - 5" travel to get 5" of wheel travel. Just some quick measuring showed me that. I'll need to fabricate and weld on some new upper shock mounts, forward of the current location. Steer tube is 26 degrees from vertical, trail is 3"

Gentlemen, your thoughts.

Right now, the stance looks a little more like a MX or dual sport than a scrambler -- lots of clearance.

I don't know how to properly set up the swingarm (anti-squat, etc.) on a scrambler to maximize traction while optimizing suspension travel.  Can you share on this aspect of the build?
