removing sprocket from the hub...help needed
« on: March 31, 2010, 06:05:25 AM »
just how do you get the sprocket off. I've whacked it and cursed but that didn't help ;D. I thought it would come loose after I removed the side plate #3 in the drawing but now I see that the bolts are inserted in some other parts.

How do you do it???????

I recommend more whacking and cursing.  Problem is that it is not supposed to be easy to get the sprocket out for obvious reasons.  Not to sound like a jerk, but did you remove the circlip (part number 11 or 17 - my eyes aren't so good).  If not, pull it off and continue with cursing and whacking.

Yeah I'll look at the circlip didn't think it was involved...but with my luck that would be why.

Also..if it is the case that the circlip is holding it in and its still tight should I use a gear puller to remove or is something threaded that I can't see?

TIA

You should be able to remove with with a pair of circlip pliers - I got my at autozone for like $10.00.  Work on these bikes enough and the circlip will become the bane of your existence.

I have found many a use for my circlip pliers, had no idea I would use it as much as I do on these bikes.

the circlip has nothing to do with holding the sprocket on, look closely and you'll see that it's for holding the bearing retainer in, it's smaller than the ID of the hole in the sprocket

Try a little PB Blaster around the area where the sprocket hits the hub. I never had an issue with removing the sprocket on these old bikes. Maybe the pic will give you a little visual. Don't let the nuts on the bolts confuse you. I just put those back on to keep the studs from falling out the back.
