76 CB750F and K differences?
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:17:22 PM »
Long story short....
I had a 550K for awhile that I rebuilt, 650 cam, the whole bit, then had to sell it because of moving across the country  :'(

Anywho, finally back in the market for a new bike, and had my mind set on a 750K, but a 750F caught my eye because it's for sale (reasonably) local. I live in Bozeman, MT now, so "local" is anywhere I can drive and back in one day.....

I can spot the aesthetic differences, but what are some of the internal or performance differences between the standard 750 and the 750 supersport?

I'm sure this has been covered before, but wading through the search results was getting old and I'm sure someone out there has a link or a great answer for me.....
Thanks!

Not a lot of large mechanical differences, They use close ratio fourth and fifth gear ratios, the newer style caliper on the front and disc rear. The cam may be a little more agressive than the same year K. I heard the timing advance is better, but this may not be true. There were more changes in the 77-78 F bikes.

Small changes to the frame geometry giving the F a small edge in handling.

Wheelbase is 57.9 inches vs. 57.3 for the K
Caster angle is 28 degrees vs 27 for the K
Trail length is 4.5 inches vs. 3.7 for the K
The F is about 20 lbs heavier and I have read that it is possibly due to thicker wall tubing for the frame but it may just be speculation.

Compression ratio is 9.2 to 1 compared to 9.0 to 1 for the K

I know it can be a contentious issue but I tried out a 74 and a 76 K and then my 76F  I even traded bikes for a few hours with a guy who had the 76K.  I felt the F was a noticeably better bike and even the 76K bike owner agreed.  Not a huge difference and both are just fine.  I am sure someone else will have a different opinion.  The F bikes are generally cheaper to buy as they are not as sought after from a collector standpoint though they are more rare than many but not all K bikes.

What year is the F?  The 77/8 does have an issue with valve guide wear so this needs to be factored in if the bike has not had the top end redone.  No particular issues with the 75/6.

You live in a great area for riding.  I have spent a lot of time out there.
