Hi!
Not that I'm an archeology fan digging such old topic  ;), but for the sake of order I decided to add my experiences here. So, recently I bought NGK iridiums at a good price on ebay, mounted them, and....
First of all, like many of us, i know my bike very well - we've been riding for a while, so I could compera it really well. And what are my remarks? well, I wonder how i could have gone without them for so long!!
aha! Spring has sprung very early here, in fact there was hardly any winter, so I'm riding quite often now. So, it's early morning (say, today), 7am, -3 deg Celsius (that's, say 25F), bike stood for a couple of days in unheated shed. And I'm living in the mountains. Normally it would be a bit of ordeal to get it firing, but now it's choke full, twist the gas few times (for acc.pump to spray some fuel) and brrmmm, engine is working. And now it's the best part. Usually I would need to go on choke for first kilometre or mile. Now the choke can be off FULLY after half this distance, AND (I like this part the best), since I live in the mountains, first 2-2,5 miles are downhill, so in summer, I just go "economy" without the engine, but now I want to warm it somehow. Ordinarily, that's a tough thing, to ride 30-40mph in cold air, on idle, and keep engine running. I know, I had this problem many times before. Now, engine purrs at low revs (around 800), but super-steadily. And when warmed up, idle suuuper smooth.
Now riding - less dramatic changes, but better response, and overall "smoother sailing". And there is the mileage perk as well.

So - don't think about it - go and but them. In your (USA) paradise of cheap and plenty, they are for 6-7$ a pop, so there's no argument about the price anymore.

Enjoy!
Welcome to my mountains!

MRieck,

Which irridium plugs are you running, or would you recommend running, on the 10.25:1 cr 836 kitted bikes.  I am currently running D9 NGKs to help stave off ping.  Thanks

G'Day. I have been using the NGK Iridium Plugs with Dyna S and a relay for the ignition for approx 2 years. I have had no problems and the bike runs smooth and starts easily. Pat

The Denso IX22 Iridium plug recommended for my CB550 has a 5K resistor and the NGK plug caps on my bike are also 5K resistor caps. Is this 10K total resistor combination going to be OK.

My ignition is also a Dyna ignition with Dyna 5 ohm coils, solid copper core Accel wires with the NGK 5K resistor caps.

I think that Dyna recommend 3OHM coils with their ignitions Jimmy?  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ya. Maybe! But TwoTired recommends 5 OHM coils. Especially on the 550.
Who you gonna believe?

I think TT still runs points on his 550's mate? ;D

I have been running IX22s with resistor caps for two seasons on my CB500 with no problems as all.  I switched to iridium plugs early in the restoration process so I can not provide any definitive comments on performance improvement.  The bike has always be a little bear to start from cold.  Once warmed up it runs strong, idles smoothly and restarts with one or two kicks and I probably will never have to buy another set of plugs.

Points or Dyna S (like mine), the 3Ohm dyna coils will out-do the alternator on a CB550.  I had the 3Ohm coils.  Dyna replaced them with 5 Ohm units and that solved my chronic charging problems.

Mighty nice of them I'd say.
I've read several posts suggesting that 5 Ohm coils where the right choice for the 550 and I'm glad I went that route.
The Dyna installation sheets recommends 3 Ohm coils as the minimum. 5 Ohm coils work just fine, as you know.

Well that's good to know, I wonder how they'd work on a 750? I've got a set of 5 Ohm Dyna coils and either a Dyna S or Dyna 3 ignition just sitting in a box........... Cheers, Terry. ;D

Supposedly not an issue on the 750, terry. I think many here do 3 ohmers. The 500/550 charging system was pretty weak.

Not sure what plugs we run in the CR but Mike will be able to tell you as he supplied them.
They worked really good in the stock motor and we got another set for the new motor with 10.25 cr and 836 kit. 8) 8) 8)

Sorry...hate to pull a Lazarus, but I have some questions before I spend some $$$.

On my 550, I am contemplating going with the DYNA S ignition and DYNA 5 Ohm coils.

What wires should be used and what plugs?

I figure the Iridiums, one heat range colder "8EIX??", and the NGK 5 OHM caps on the NGK 7mm wires would be the way to go.

I would REALLY appreciate some solid advice on this before I spend some coin.

Thanks,

~Joe
