Handlebar question
« on: January 24, 2006, 06:02:09 PM »
The bike I am repairing at one time had a cinder(sp?) block thrown on it, so the handlebars were bent, at one time the owner bent them back, it is pretty close, but I figure if I can fix it, why not!  So here is an auction I am watching, it looks like it should work http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4606137565&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AWNA%3AUS%3A112&sasel=&id=

Any thoughts?  I would like to keep it as stock as possible, and I cannot tell if this is or not.

let me know if that auction doesn't work out. I just took a set of stock bars off my 78 550. I was thinking about keeping them for future projects, but who knows when that will be, and even then, i don't care what bars i use...

It's tough to see (I saved & blew up the picture), but it doesn't look like the wire holes are there.  If not, the wires will have to be run on the outside as they are damn hard to drill.  There's not much time to ask and get an answer, but it's worth a try.

Handlebars show up often, so if you're not in a rush keep a look out.  I snagged a set of stock "72 CB550" bars (go figure, the 550 came out in '74 - I must have gotten a set of 550 sandcast bars) for $5.  Of course, my shipping was $10, this one calcs to $4.

I'll keep an eye on the last set, though the way they stand now they are at $30, and I recently spent $25 for new controls left and right, figures  ::).  corbinsa, what would you want for yours?  I know on my 78 the wiring is not inside the bars, is this true with all 78's?

I am not in a huge rush as the ones are 'pretty' straight, but like I said, if I am going to have most of that tore off anyway, why not replace 'em!

My 78 550K are outside my bars. Just zip tied to them. I need to replace my Bicycle bars on my 72 500 as Gordon would call them, with some stock ones. These are run inside and might be a chore to get them in the stock bars. I might have to zip tie them on the outside just for easyness of 4 zipties.

So I did not go for 'em.  I like the fact that the wiring is run on the inside.  Maybe I will go over and post something in the wanted section.  Do you know what years they ran the wiring inside on the 500/550's?

Mine are wired outside. I'd take $25 shipped for them. has left grip on it, had to cut right grip to get off of throttle sleeve though.

Based on my collection, all the stock CB500/550s (Ks and Fs) had internal wire routing except the 77 and 78 K models.

Interesting. The bars that were on my bike when I got it were NOT factory stock (10" rise pullbacks- very hard on the wrists), but they did have internal wiring. I've since gotten THREE sets of stock 550 bars (or at least that's what they were sold as or came on), and NONE of them has had internal wiring. Perhaps they were actually from 750s... does anyone know if the 750's had internal wiring? My stock '73 CB750 does not, and the bars look stock, but who knows what's been done to this thing over the years.

My bars are not stock, but have internal wires.  I have since bought a set of 'stock' that also have wire holes.  I have no idea how to tell if they're really stock or not, but they are a little taller, which is what I wanted.  Another winter project...

Did you get these from Honda?  What year did you specify?

Aftermarket manufacturers bend 'em to shape, but don't drill em to keep costs down.  They also don't have the locating pin holes for the bar controls.  Genuine honda bars had both the wire holes and the locating pin holes and were ready to install.

Bought them from a local guy who had them since the late 70s. Had a 500 with ape hangers and bought these to switch. When he saw what a job it was to switch them, he put them in a drawer for 25+ yrs. Gave him $20 and the promise of a future favor.

Hey grumberg, how'd you get the later (and wider) 550 left hand switch assy. to mount up correctly where the older and narrower 500 switch assy. belongs? I tried 500 bars on my 550 k0 and the left switch housing was too wide. And, the little peg that "locates" the switch housing didn't line up with the little "locating hole" in the bars. I must've missed something, cause I couldn't make my 500 bars work. Just curious......

That's what I was talking about. When, I see something that I might try to get, 1st I check and see if one of the SOHC guys are bidding and, if not, I start going for it . The next thing I know, this same character jumps in there and comes away with it.   Really aggravating.     Later, Bill

I should add that my problem with switch fit was discovered with the left hand grip already installed, before the attempted installation of the switch housing. Have you tried to fit the left hand grip yet?
Will it slide completely on? Or does it butt up against the switch housing too soon? Again, just curious...

My guess is that he's using an auction sniper service. It won't garauntee a winning bid, but they bid at the last second, so no one else has time to bid after.
